“A motorcycle survival loop carries the post-apocalyptic road mood and the Horde sieges are its signature, at the cost of a story dragged by template missions”
Unser Fazit
Critics cold, players hot — a split that ran for years

The most interesting thing about Days Gone is the rift in its reception. On the press side: Metacritic 76 on PC, a 72 aggregate on OpenCritic, a recommendation rate that barely clears half. On the player side: a 92 percent positive rating on Steam, an unambiguous "Very Positive." The gap between those two is not noise. It is two evaluation systems pulling in opposite directions.
Why? Critics in 2019 met an over-long, technically rough, narratively saggy open world, and inside that review window the repeated tasks and the bland structure got magnified to fill the frame. A review has to render a verdict on a clock, and this game happens to be a slow burn — its best horde fights are buried in the mid-to-late game and its opening drags, so a deadline writer can easily file before tasting the payoff. Long-term players weighted the motorcycle survival loop and the horde sieges, that one-of-a-kind experience, and were happy to pay in for atmosphere and feel; they also caught the PC build and the wave of patches that scrubbed out a mountain of problems. Put plainly, critics graded launch completeness and players voted on the long tail — two rulers measuring different objects.
Who it is for, and who should ride around it

This game is picky, so the advice should be blunt. If you live for the post-apocalyptic road mood, if resource management and survival-on-the-move are your idea of fun, and if you are willing to wait out a slow opening, you will very likely ride this Oregon wilderness to your heart's content — what it does uniquely, nowhere else gives you.
Flip it around. If what you prize is narrative momentum, if checklist repetition wears on you, and if you want the thrill up front, it will probably start tiring you somewhere past the midpoint. Its strengths need time to ferment and its weaknesses arrive early, and that temperament settles it: this is not a game built to please everyone. It asks for patience — you have to treat the first dozen hours as an investment and trust the horde fights to be worth the wait. Ask yourself one thing before buying: do you play open worlds for the tight narrative peaks, or for a slow, sinkable survival journey? If it is the latter, this wilderness pays you back.
A regretful one-off with no sequel
The historical footing is distinctive too. In 2019 it took Golden Joystick wins for Best Visual Design and Best Storytelling, sold 7.32 million copies, and sat in the same weight class as fellow first-party title Ghost of Tsushima — yet the press treatment was worlds apart. The sequel ultimately collapsed, leaving this a passably finished one-off with no second chance to iterate; every structural flaw it exposes goes uncorrected by a follow-up. It proves that critic scores and long-run player satisfaction are not always the same thing, and that some games only develop their value once time has passed.
What you see is the whole of it — no "wait for the sequel to complete it" hanging in the air — so whether you ride out has to be judged on what it is right now. One closing verdict: it is not a flawless game, not even one without obvious weak spots, but it owns one thing nobody can take away. When hundreds of Freakers come pouring at you and all you have is a bike low on fuel and a head full of improvised math, that pressure and that rush are its alone, and they buy back a fair number of its faults.
