“If Iron Lung and Mouthwashing left you wanting something deeper and more hands-on, MOLE is your next descent. But it never guides you, and a single run is about two and a half hours — if you need clear objectives or balk at the length-to-price ratio, wait it out.”

Unser Fazit

The MOLE’s Dashboard Is the Whole Nightmare

MOLE screenshot

MOLE is the kind of horror game that makes a normal button feel hostile. That’s the big trick here. There’s no cozy HUD floating over the screen, no clean objective marker, no tutorial voice politely telling you what went wrong. You’re inside this monstrous post-war drilling machine, buried under Slavic soil, and every dial, gauge, switch, and ugly little panel is the interface. What you see is what you use. And when something breaks, the horror isn’t just “something is outside.” The horror is, “I don’t know this machine well enough to stay alive.”

That’s why it lands so hard if you’re into the Iron Lung, Mouthwashing, SOMA lane of indie horror. It’s cramped. It’s nasty. It trusts silence, pressure, and implication more than monster chases. But compared to Iron Lung, MOLE feels thicker mechanically. Iron Lung basically locked you in a single tiny submarine coffin and squeezed you with atmosphere. MOLE takes that same sealed-in panic and gives you more to actually operate, more to learn, and more ways for the machine itself to become the threat.

And yeah, the reputation is already loud. On Steam, it’s sitting at 97% positive from 1,308 reviews, with an Overwhelmingly Positive tag. That doesn’t mean everyone should buy it. It means the people who want this very specific kind of suffocating, system-driven horror are really getting what they came for. Off Black Creations clearly understands that fear gets sharper when the game refuses to separate you from the object keeping you alive. Coming from former GTFO developers, that makes sense. This is pressure horror. Not loud horror. Not “boo” horror. Pressure.

Buy It If You Like Being Lost On Purpose

Here’s the catch: MOLE is not friendly, and honestly, it shouldn’t be. If you need a map, a checklist, and a glowing arrow telling you where to go next, this thing is going to annoy you fast. The lack of guidance is part of the design. You observe. You poke at systems. You listen. You get things wrong. Then the machine groans back at you like it’s personally offended. That loop can be amazing if you like figuring out rules by touching the hot stove. It can also feel like a wall if you just want clean pacing and clear tasks.

The other sticking point is length. A single run is around 2.5 hours, and that’s going to be the price argument for a lot of people. There are hidden achievements and story branches, but this is mostly a one-shot narrative horror experience. You’re not buying a forever game. You’re buying one nasty descent, built around mood, sound, and mechanical intimacy. For me, that’s enough to justify a 7.8 out of 10 overall. Strong, memorable, and very confident — but not immune to the short-runtime complaint.

As for platform advice, this is a Steam-first conversation. The listed release is June 15, 2026, with MOLE on Steam under publisher Oro Interactive, so unless another confirmed version is in front of you, that’s the version I’d be looking at. If you played Iron Lung, Mouthwashing, or SOMA and thought, “I want something more tactile, more mechanical, and less hand-holdy,” put this high on your list. If you want monsters sprinting down hallways, big jump scares, or a game that explains itself cleanly, skip it. MOLE is for players who enjoy being trapped with a machine they barely understand.
