“Up front: this is Early Access with a year-plus to go. But if you grow with it, it hooks you with a handmade clay feel found nowhere else — every critter and plant was sculpted from real clay and scanned in.”

Unser Fazit

Fold the good and the rough back together and OddFauna is a cozy sandbox whose looks and direction are both spot-on, just waiting on time to thicken up its content. My composite is a 7.3 — a number that salutes that one-of-a-kind handmade art while honestly owning how unfinished it is as an Early Access release.

A husband-and-wife clay workshop, and a fresh cozy face for 2026

North Channel, a two-person studio

First the coordinates: OddFauna hit Steam Early Access on June 2, 2026, at $24.99, and landed 88% mostly-positive reviews out of the gate. Behind it is a two-person studio, North Channel — tech developer Cliff Mitchell and artist Emma SanCartier, who sculpts every asset by hand, a married pair. That small-shop authorship is its whole character: this isn't a product off an industrial line, it's handwork two people chiseled out one piece at a time, and that warmth can't be faked. They split the labor down the middle — one hunched over clay and paint, the other scanning, modeling, scripting systems, and tuning the engine — and that handcraft-plus-tech pipeline is the only reason a sandbox with such an intimidating workload got made, on schedule, by two people.

Drop it into 2026, a year crowded with cozy life sims, and the thing rivals can't easily replicate is that physical clay-scanned texture. Stardew Valley, Animal Crossing, and Slime Rancher all have their devotees, but none of them can hand you this three-dimensional, fingerprint-warm, made-by-human-hands feel.

That distinctiveness cuts both ways, mind you. A unique surface is a wonderful hook, but it's not the same as a deep game, and OddFauna's job over the next year is to prove the systems underneath are as worth your time as the clay on top. Right now the look is the headline and the loops are the supporting cast; the 1.0 version needs to flip enough of that around to justify a full-price, finished release.

Who should actually spend the twenty-five bucks today

Who it's for right now

So, bottom line — should that money leave your wallet now? There's no one-size answer; it hinges entirely on what kind of player you are and how much patience you've got for those two words, "Early Access." Let me split you into two sharply different camps, and you'll likely know which one is yours by the end of a sentence.

If you love slow, cozy farming, savor growing a world up from bare ground, happen to be charmed by that handmade clay texture, and are happy to play a good thing while you wait for it to grow — then yes, it's worth it today. Try the free demo first; if it clicks, climb aboard, and the earlier you buy the kinder the price ends up being over the long run.

But if what you want is a finished, content-stuffed game you can binge to the bottom, or if you have zero tolerance for early bugs and a currently limited handful of biomes — my advice is blunt: wishlist it instead. Park it, let it grow through another update or two until the biomes and story open up, then come back.

I'm genuinely bullish on its direction and the potential is real, but what you'd be buying is that foundation and that promise, not a game that's already done. The clay is unimpeachable; the building is still a little wobbly; the world is small but growing. Get that clear in your head before you click buy and you won't walk away disappointed — and if the clay alone is enough to make you grin, honestly, you already know what you're going to do.
