A free Steam game called Beyond The Dark has been pulled after reports that it contained malware capable of stealing cryptocurrency wallet data, browser passwords, and even Roblox account credentials. The warning was first raised by YouTuber Eric Parker, and current reporting links the malicious build to a hijacked developer account for Rodent Race. According to those reports, attackers exploited the fact that Steam updates do not undergo a second round of content review, then pushed a compromised version live.

The malware was reportedly hidden inside the "UnityPlayer.dll" file, and even when the game itself crashed repeatedly, the background payload could continue running. That moves this beyond a simple scam listing. It suggests abuse of a gap in the platform’s update-review process.

The payload also does not appear to target just one type of data. Reports say it scans Chrome for crypto wallet extensions, including common targets such as MetaMask, then connects to a remote malicious server, downloads additional info-stealing tools, and extracts browser passwords, browsing history, and crypto assets. Some reports add that it may also steal Roblox login credentials. At that point, this is no longer just an unsafe game download. It is a direct threat across the shared space between your browser, wallet extensions, and gaming accounts.

What is more concerning is that this is not an isolated incident. The original reporting notes that malware distributed through free Steam games has become a recurring problem in recent years. The bigger the platform and the lower the barrier to entry, the easier it is for players to assume that a game listed on Steam has at least passed a basic safety threshold. This case is a reminder that a storefront page can look legitimate without the software behind it being safe.
