God of War Voice Actor Slams Amazon for Dropping Original Cast

Christopher Judge—the voice of Kratos in the God of War series—has publicly slammed Amazon Prime’s live-action God of War for shutting out every original game writer. At a recent comic con—and later on social media—he made it clear: he’s not angling to play Kratos. He’s fighting for the writers who built the series over 20 years.

His warning lands amid a string of failed game adaptations—Halo, Borderlands—that crashed by ignoring what made the originals work.

He praised HBO’s The Last of Us as “stunning”—a success he credits squarely to Naughty Dog’s hands-on role. Amazon’s version, meanwhile, has Cory Barlog—a longtime God of War developer—as executive producer but zero writers from the games. Without those writers, he warns, the show risks repeating past mistakes: huge budgets and flashy trailers papering over a story with no spine.

Notably, Ryan Hurst—originally cast as Kratos—previously voiced Thor in the 2022 God of War: Ragnarök. That connection might’ve helped unify game and show—if the writing team had been there to guide it. But without them, even great acting can’t save characters stripped of their purpose.

This isn’t about bringing back the same names—it’s about giving the people who know God of War’s DNA a seat at the table. If Amazon wants to dodge another Borderlands-style disaster, Barlog should assemble a writers’ advisory group drawn from Santa Monica Studio’s narrative team. Because the cheapest mistake Amazon can make? Assuming fans won’t notice when the heart of God of War gets left behind.
