Saros Cycle scores 88 – bullet hell veterans finally nailed narrative design
Housemarque dropped Samsara Cycle five years after Sony Interactive Entertainment acquired the Finnish studio, scoring 88 on Metacritic. The team that once drowned players in bullet hell has learned to tell stories.

Set on the Gothic planet Calcosa, the game opens with a solar anomaly driving the entire world into madness. Lead character Arjun is voiced by Midnight Mass actor Rahul Kohli, with Jane Perry joining the cast. What stands out is the narrative investment: Housemarque brought in a dedicated dialogue team from PlayStation, and senior narrative designer Khalil Osaimi comes from a cinematography background. For a gameplay-first studio, that's a rare allocation of resources.

Combat shifts from bullet hell to bullet ballet—a meaningful distinction. The new camp system addresses Returnal's most criticized issue: progress preservation. Eclipse states dynamically ramp up enemy aggression. These aren't flashy additions, but they target veteran pain points directly.
Beyond nostalgia, the real question is whether domestic studios can extract lessons here. Housemarque spent five years proving hardcore mechanics and narrative depth aren't mutually exclusive. Chinese developers chasing sentiment might ask: beyond reskins and stat tweaks, what actually sticks with players? Worth playing, but more worth studying for local teams.
