Marvel's Wolverine Set for September 15, 2026 Release as Reactions Split

Marvel’s Wolverine is now set to launch on September 15, 2026 as a PS5 exclusive, and Sony’s State of Play didn’t just bring a date. Insomniac Games also unveiled a substantial batch of new details, including confirmation that this high-profile AAA project is dropping the open-world framework in favor of a linear narrative structure — a decision that has already divided players.

That choice looks less like a downgrade and more like a deliberate narrowing of focus. Instead of simply building a bigger map, Insomniac seems to be shaping tighter scenarios around what Wolverine can actually do. The studio is making a clear break from the urban open-world template of the Marvel’s Spider-Man series. Its reasoning is simple: Spider-Man is rooted in a city, while Wolverine is a drifter who rarely stays in one place for long, so a linear structure better fits his background and the game’s overall tone.

That priority shows up in the way the game is structured. The focus is less on how far players can roam and more on how they handle each encounter. Based on what has been shown so far, players will still be free to tackle situations through direct combat or stealth, while environments unlock gradually through the main story. Each area is also being designed around Wolverine’s signature abilities, including his claws and healing factor. So while this isn’t open-world freedom, it still leaves plenty of room for player choice within each encounter.

It also makes sense for the kind of story Insomniac appears to be telling. Open worlds can offer scale and immersion, but they often dilute the pacing of the main plot by scattering attention across side content. That problem is especially obvious in superhero games built around a strong central character: the drama peaks, then the player wanders off to clear map icons. A linear format is better suited to the tight pacing and sharp turns of classic comic-book storytelling, keeping every major conflict tied to Wolverine’s arc.

That divide is easy enough to understand. For some players, “not open world” immediately sounds like less exploration and possibly less replay value. Others will see it as exactly the right call, since Marvel’s Spider-Man already covers the city-swinging fantasy and Marvel’s Wolverine needs a combat identity of its own. Based on the current direction, that identity leans into a wilder, more hard-edged combat style built around the impact of Wolverine’s claws, which does meaningfully separate it from Spider-Man.

As part of Sony’s 2026 PS5 lineup, the game’s appeal is already taking shape. This is not a project chasing sheer scale, but a tighter AAA action game built around story. Players who want a cinematic structure, a complete main storyline, and heavy-impact combat will probably like what they’re seeing. Players who care more about long-form exploration and map freedom will likely need more gameplay before deciding how much the linear structure gives up. For now, development appears to be progressing smoothly, and Insomniac is clearly not trying to replicate Marvel’s Spider-Man. It is building a separate gameplay framework for this new Marvel IP.
