Sony PS5 raises price by $200 then immediately offers discounts? This move is confusing

Sony's move this time is truly baffling. In early April, they just raised prices across the entire PS5 lineup by a significant margin - the digital edition jumped straight from $399 to $599, the disc version also increased to $649.99, and the Pro version even soared to a sky-high $900. The official reason given was supply chain constraints, which sounded reasonable enough.

Then less than two weeks later, PlayStation Direct suddenly listed a $399 Fortnite bundle. That's right, the original price of the digital edition before the increase. This bundle includes not only the console but also in-game items, essentially a $200 price drop. The contrast is clear: buying the digital edition alone now costs $599, while buying the bundle is $200 cheaper and comes with extras.

This raise-then-lower tactic isn't exactly new in the gaming hardware world. Xbox Series S pulled similar moves back in the day, raising prices then offering limited-time deals to clear inventory. But Sony's timing this time is too tight - third-party retailers just finished adjusting prices, and the official store immediately starts discounting. It's somewhat embarrassing. Amazon was still selling at the old price a few days ago, which now makes them look like the good guys.

From a player's perspective, this bundle is genuinely worth it. Getting a digital edition console for $399 offers maximum value for those who don't use physical discs. But the problem is, what about those who just bought at the new price? Supply chain constraints are real, promotional inventory clearance is also real - putting these two things together just seems contradictory.

Looking at the competition, Nintendo Switch 2 has maintained rock-solid pricing since launch, and Microsoft's Series X hasn't seen major fluctuations either. Sony's volatile pricing strategy might stimulate sales in the short term, but long-term it may not be good for brand trust. For those looking to buy a PS5, I'd suggest waiting a bit longer - who knows what new tactics next month will bring.
