Sony Backs Down, Cuts Live Service Games to Refocus on Single-Player Blockbusters
Sony's live-service gamble has imploded. Jim Ryan promised 10 live-service titles by 2026 when he ran SIE from 2019 to 2024—now the company's shuttering studios and canceling projects at breakneck speed.

Concord's failure triggered the collapse. The hero shooter bombed so hard it took Firewalk Studios down with it. Sony even axed The Last of Us Online, a project fans had waited years for. The company's learning an expensive lesson: live-service isn't a guaranteed revenue stream, no matter how much capital you sink into it.
Helldivers 2 stands as the lone success story—12 million copies sold across PS5 and PC in three months, making it one of PlayStation's fastest-growing games ever. The takeaway? Solid gameplay and substantial content still win players over. Meanwhile, projects banking on monetization and live ops are getting rejected by the market.

Shuhei Yoshida's departure in January 2025 after 31 years at PlayStation marks the end of an era. He watched the company shift from first-party excellence to live-service gambling. Sony's finally course-correcting back to high-quality single-player titles, but the cost includes multiple studio closures and mass layoffs.
For players, this pivot is actually positive. Sony's strength has always been narrative-driven single-player blockbusters—God of War and Horizon are what define PlayStation. Better to invest resources in proven strengths than struggle in the live-service red ocean dominated by Destiny 2 and Fortnite. Breaking into that space as a latecomer is brutally difficult.
Sony's strategic retreat sends a clear message to the industry: chasing live-service trends leads nowhere. Focusing on distinctive content is the real path forward. Here's hoping we see more projects with the commitment of the Demon's Souls remake.
