Trails from Zero and Trails to Azure coming to PS5 and Switch 2 this fall with 4K 120fps support
NIS America announced that The Legend of Heroes: Trails from Zero and Trails to Azure will launch on Switch 2 and PS5 this fall, supporting up to 4K resolution at 120 frames per second. Both titles can be purchased as a bundle or separately, with the Switch 2 version adding mouse input support.

Compared to the PSP and PS4 releases, the performance leap is the main draw here. 4K120 is premium treatment for a JRPG—the Ys series on PS5 caps at 4K60, so Trails doubling that frame rate is notable. That the Switch 2 version hits these specs signals a real generational jump in Nintendo's hardware. The original Switch struggled to hold 30fps in Trails of Cold Steel.

The high-speed mode and texture toggle are practical additions. Veterans grinding side quests on a second playthrough will save time with the speed boost, while the original texture option caters to purists who want the PSP's pixel aesthetic intact. Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster offered something similar, but Trails makes the switch between HD and retro textures seamless and on-demand.

Mouse input on Switch 2 addresses a longstanding issue. The Trails series has always had cumbersome menu navigation, especially when organizing items and orbment setups. PC players could click through these screens efficiently; console players had to cursor through every slot. Switch 2 now closes that gap for handheld users who found controller navigation tedious.
Xbox remains absent. Falcom's relationship with Microsoft has been lukewarm—no mainline Trails entry from Sky through Kuro has officially reached Xbox. This next-gen port sticks with Sony and Nintendo. Xbox players wanting into the series will need to wait for PC sales or watch other platforms from the sidelines.
The fall release window sits between the Japanese launch of Kuro no Kiseki III and its English localization. Series veterans can revisit the Crossbell arc with upgraded visuals, while newcomers get the definitive way to experience these two connective entries. A bundle discount is likely; if buying separately, start with Zero for narrative continuity.
