A very forgettable and short experience. This is my main problem: 1 to 2 minute stages, most of which are extremely linear with lots of straight/automated paths and QTEs. Really brings the input the player has to an insultingly low level. It was really difficult to get enthralled with the game when the levels are over in the snap of a finger, and when you did so little yourself besides boost and attack a chain of enemies. For Classic Sonic, it's just some mediocre platforming that really pale in comparison to Mania's level design. My second major problem is the game is absurdly short. I beat the main campaign in just 2 and a half hours. Worth 40 dollars? Hell no, I got MUCH more time out of Sonic Mania which has much better replay value. Finding red rings isn't fun, and S ranks are very easy to obtain just like in Generations. I also found the controls very strange and awkward. Both Sonics feel really floaty and their momentum feels like they stop to a screeching halt in midair the second you turn in the opposite direction. Modern Sonic controls terribly when in a 3D space so you pretty much just need to rely on quick steps to reliably move around. All the characters are just needlessly difficult to control in the air, and it really feels like momentum isn't taken into account which makes everything random and unpredictable, comparing it to something with actual good momentum like Super Mario Odyssey. The Avatar just feels like a slower version of Modern Sonic stages with a weapon. They have exactly the same moves, besides the avatar not being able to boost. It makes the stages themselves feel incredibly samey, and the weapon/grappling hook doesn't justify enough differences to make this a "different" playstyle. I really don't know what to say when the boss battle stages are the longest levels in the game. Those aren't hard either, just tedious. Forces didn't do too much wrong, but it was way too short and simple with little player input. Generations and Unleashed did the boost formula much better than this.Show moreShow less
Steps to enjoy: 1. Don't buy at full price. Buy on sale. I bought for $10 2. Don't play the base game unmodded, that's why the reviews for this game are mixed 3. Download Hedgemodmanager 4. Download Sonic Forces Reimagined and Classic Sonic Improvement mods from Gamebanana 5. Enjoy a much better version of the base game. Has roughly 30+ stages total 6. After you finish the base game, disable both of those previous mods and download Sonic Forces Overclocked 7. Enjoy a very nice epilogue for the game. Has 8 stages totalShow moreShow less
Only Sonic Team could have the talent of taking an existing and proven formula and run it into the ground which can be seen blatantly in their latest effort Sonic Forces. The game features 3 distinct gameplay styles of Classic and Modern Sonic as well as the new addition of the Custom Character. The Custom Character in my experience was the most enjoyable. The levels felt large and the wispons were a nice addition to help with the average platforming found in these areas. The OC controls like a gimped modern sonic without boost but has more of a focus on combat with flamethrowers, whips, hammers, etc. These don't matter for the most part as enemies are destroyed in 1 hit. The Character Creation is simple but allows for some hilarious character models and some nice homages via the clothing items available. Modern Sonic hit a revival with the boost era of games and Sonic Team have somehow took a successful formula almost 10 years old and destroyed it. There's much more momentum in his movement but it's much harder to control. The biggest example of this is when you need to go around corners that would normally use drifitng but since Sonic team removed drifting if you try to speed into the corner you will either bump into the wall present or fall of a ledge into your death (This is especially prevalent in Modern Sonic's Metropolis level). There is no reason to remove abilities such as light speed dash and wall jump if they have been present in the boost gameplay since Sonic Unleashed as it removes oppurtunities to create interesting levels. Levels are basically hold boost to finish as most of these levels can take 1 or 2 minutes to complete if you don't fall off into bottom less pits due to trash sense of controls. It wouldn't even matter since the game takes control away from you for half the duration of the level anyway to throw in some rubbish quick time events for some "set piece". Classic Sonic's gameplay is what you expect from Sonic Generations. For the most part his level design is better than Modern Sonic and does use multiple routes to discover the best areas to speed past but is nowhere close to the complexity of Sonic Mania. Classic Sonic's physics are also notably worse than in Generations. The biggest example is his nerf of max speed, unless you are drop dashing every 2 seconds it can be a chore to try and speed through the levels. Another problem is his spin jump, often I would misjudge if Sonic would be able to hit an enemy or jump to another platform and as a result get hit or die in a bottomless pit. The physics haven't felt this 'wrong' to me since playing Sonic 4 Episode 1. The game does look nice and runs really well however the game does lack zone variety with there being 7 different environments and 3 out of the 7 areas are just areas from the genesis era whilst the remaining 4 are just generic city or jungle environments. Soundtrack is great but that's expected from a Sonic game at this point. Sonic Forces is probably the most baffling game I've played in a long time. I don't even know what Sonic Team was doing for 4 years since Lost World. It took me 3.5 hours to beat the game along with the episode Shadow DLC. If Sonic Team think that releasing a game of this quality with that length of playtime they should realise that this isn't 1992 anymore. This should be a wake up call for Sega to find a different development team that is willing to try different ideas for Sonic because if Sonic Mania can prove that the hedgehog can have a great game from a Western Developer it would be time to invest elsewhere. If not Sonic Team needs to know, just because a game looks nice, sounds nice and incorporates elements from fan favourite games doesn't excuse a game that plays like complete garbage especially compared to Sonic Generations.Show moreShow less
Give this game a chance. Please. Forces receives an incredibly bad rep by the fanbase. Trust me, this game is not as bad as 06. (I've played both on original hardware, 06 is genuinely unplayable garbage with no redeeming qualities outside of it's soundtrack.) It has amazing visuals, an amazing soundtrack, fun gameplay, and one of the coolest antagonists of this franchise. Also custom characters are really cool to mess around with. The only real gripe I have with this game is that it's too short and it's story could be improved. Please check this out if you're a Sonic fan, or want to get into the franchise. Narratively, this is one of the most important games to the timeline, so it's best to have the knowledge of this game under your belt. Hell, you could even end up like me and really loving this game. Are there more polished games? Yeah, totally. Frontiers is one of the best, if not THE best modern sonic game. But for me, Forces will always be my favorite in the franchise. 10/10.Show moreShow less
This is a game that just screams playing it safe. Considering that this game is $40 from the start, my expectations were pretty low to begin with. Some aspects in the game are great, other aspects of the game are things that I don't ever want to revisit. The Avatar is one of the aspects that I don't see myself going back to because it doesn't really wow me enough to go and try out the stuff that I've unlocked. The other weapons that you unlock with the Avatar are inconspicuous and the game doesn't do a good job in telling you that you have them and how to use them. Another thing that I don't find myself revisiting is the Classic levels; I feel like that the level design of the Classic levels are mediocre, especially in comparison to Sonic Mania. Modern Sonic to me personally is the only redeeming quality in terms of gameplay. Coming from a person who's spend over 100 hours on Sonic Generations, I can say that Modern Sonic's stages are fun, but it's definitely a step down from Unleashed and Generations. A lot of Modern Sonics levels are very linear and have very few open pathing to flesh out this gameplay style. This is not mentioning that I feel that his controls are a lot more clunky compared to the two previous games that I've mentioned. With the exception of the first stage, I like all of Modern Sonics levels, though I will admit that there are better levels than others without question. The thing that defines Unleashed and Generations for me is that both games allow you to go fast while at the same time rewards you for exploring the enviornment. Good examples are Seaside Hill from Generations and Skyscraper Scamper from Unleashed. The pathing in both stages are fantastic; tons of alternative paths that lead to different areas instead of being a alternative route to the same area. From a technical standpoint the game looks absolutely fantastic; I feel that the visuals are expertly crafted in this game, fully immersing you in its world. The soundtrack is also pretty good, a lot of tracks I can see myself listening to in the future. But honestly I'm a little dissapointed on how Sonic Forces turned out. If Sonic Generations is a B+ to me, then Sonic Forces is a C+. If they fleshed out the levels better and give me better reason to replay the Avatar stages then I have no doubt that this game would be better. As it stands, it's one of the most mediocre Sonic games I've played in sometime. I love Sonic, but I cannot deny that this game is a bit of a let down.Show moreShow less
Honestly, it's not broken or really unplayable. It's just....boring? The level design is so flat and sterile with these weird mechanics that hold your hand. In a platformer. Classic Sonic even has these rigid mechanics and weird unnatural caps on his abilities. And the custom character is just very clunky with combat that is not satisfying at all. Way too easy a game. Was over in 2 hours. So what are the pros? +It's gorgeous +As usual, the music is FIRE and this is a very unique soundtrack for Sonic +It attempts a very different story for the series which is bold (even if it falls flat) +The character creation is very fun and you can make some surprisingly good looking stuff despite the initial memes about "huh huh DeviantArt Sanic OC's" That's about it... It works. But it's not fun. Just get Spark the Electric Jester 2. Love the blue bastard to pieces. I'll always be excited for his next major adventures. But sometimes, we just take these L's until SonicTeam eventually wants to figure out what works.Show moreShow less
My experience so far: No crashing (post-patch) Rock solid 60fps with no stuttering No cutscene issues Sounds good right? Well... The game is only 2 hours long. No joke. I beat the story in just over 2 hours. Extra activities and side mission might bring that up to about 4-6 hours, but even then it's not worth 40€. This is why I wish there was a "maybe" or "meh" option when reviewing games. Wait until sale or price drop.Show moreShow less
just get it for sonic forces overclocked, otherwise ,yeah, this is kinda worthlessShow moreShow less
Disappointed, but not surprised. Sonic team does it again. The game fails on almost every single aspect, the level design is atrocious, the stages are way too short, the avatar sucks and the game is just a bore to go through, unlike Generations and Colors; who both had excellent level design that made the game that much fun to go through. The music is the game's only saving grace and even then, only a handful of songs are memorable. The game has around 30 missions, that might seem like alot to you but all missions are completable within 1:30 to 3 minutes, and most of these missions have you revisit the same stages over and over again. I think there might be 6 or 7 unique "stages" in the game. It's worth nothing that i finished the game in 3.2 hours. Sonic Team should hand over 3D Sonic to Christian Whitehead and his team. It hurts me to give this game a bad review but i can't recommend this game to anyone who appreciates polished content and memorable experiences because there is none to be found here. A real mess, buy Sonic Mania instead.Show moreShow less
