“Reshaping a whole planet like clay fuels the creative urge; a thin sense of purpose is what truly separates it from hardcore sandboxes.”

Nuestro veredicto

Critics and players saw it very differently.

The most interesting thing about ASTRONEER is how far apart critics and players are on it. On the critic side, 26 OpenCritic reviews land around 75 and a "Strong" rating, but only 56% recommend it, and IGDB's aggregate sits in the low 80s — all "good, not great" territory. On the player side, more than 117,000 Steam reviews hold up a 92% positive mark, top-tier for an indie sandbox.

Cautious critics, devoted players

That split makes sense. Critics weigh goal design, narrative completeness, and technical polish — precisely this game's weak spots. Players vote on how fun it actually is to play and whether they can keep going — precisely its strengths. Once you see that, its sharply defined strengths and weaknesses make perfect sense: this is not a balanced game so much as one that bets everything on creative freedom. Its most distinctive trait is the ability to reshape an entire planet like clay, and that kind of freedom is something you will scarcely find anywhere else — it is exactly what has earned it an untouchable place in the crowded sandbox genre.

Is it right for you?

Down to the actual buy-or-not, the conclusion is simple, and it hinges on being honest about what you want from a sandbox. If you love free-form building, live for automation and engineering projects, or just want a relaxing game where you can mine alongside friends and chat, ASTRONEER offers a kind of joy that is hard to find elsewhere and is well worth a look. It is inexpensive to begin with and often gets deep Steam discounts, so if you are not in a rush, waiting will only get you a more complete version. This is also one of those rare games where buying late is the smart move rather than a missed window: the content only grows, the price only drops, and the stability only improves with each passing update. Co-op is the strongest recommendation of all — round up two or three friends, agree on nothing in particular, and let an evening dissolve into digging, building, and idle chatter. Played that way, ASTRONEER stops being a game you finish and becomes a place you visit, and that is when its real appeal clicks into focus.

The relaxed pleasure of building with friends

So which side are you on?

But if what you want most from a game is clear goals, a sharp challenge, or solid storytelling, its lack of direction and thinning late-game momentum will likely lose you once the novelty fades. Its most common comparison, Subnautica, wins on exactly that — a story, real dread, and the pull to drag you all the way to the finish. ASTRONEER chose the other path: it does not lead you; it spreads a whole planet out in front of you and lets you decide what to mold from it.

Those games were never trying to do the same thing, and measuring ASTRONEER against hardcore sandboxes is using the wrong yardstick to begin with. The only question you really have to ask yourself is this: do you want to be led through a world, or to shape a world into whatever you want with your own hands? Answer that, and the score on this page sorts itself out for you — the same game can be a few-hundred-hour favorite for one person and a two-hour shrug for another, and almost all of it comes down to which side you stand on. There is no objectively correct verdict here, only a question of fit — which is, in its own way, the most honest thing a review of ASTRONEER can tell you.
