The VR benchmark that turns melee into pure physics feel, and Crystal Hunt finally gives the sandbox a goal worth chasing

Nuestro veredicto

A landmark's coming-of-age

VR landmark status

Looked at from 2026, Blade & Sorcery long ago stopped being merely "a fun VR game" and became a fixture the medium cannot route around. It gets shelved next to Beat Saber, Half-Life: Alyx and Boneworks as one of the most iconic VR titles ever made, and the Overwhelmingly Positive standing — 96 percent across more than 58,000 Steam reviews — backs that reputation with the plainest possible numbers. What Crystal Hunt 1.0 supplies is the one piece the landmark always lacked: a goal, a growth arc and an ending. A late coming-of-age, arriving years after the game had already earned its place, and welcome all the same.

Its irreplaceable edge is just as clear — pure physics-driven melee. Parries that shed force, blades that lodge, location-based damage, killing by the strength of your arm rather than a button string: that package is something almost no VR game reaches, and almost none can copy. Its most direct rival, Gorn, plays the violence broader and funnier yet trails badly on combat depth, magic and mods, which is why, all these years on, this still holds the top seat in VR physical melee. That seat was not won by chasing trends or out-spending anyone on spectacle; it was won by taking one elemental idea and refusing to stop sharpening it until the competition simply ran out of room to follow.

Who should buy, who should skip, which version

Who this game is for

Start with who should buy. If you are a hardcore melee player who wants to actually kill by hand in VR — fighting with your body, not your fingers — or a tinkerer who will sink hours into bending the game into your own shape with mods, it is close to a must-own; that brand of up-close violence and endless extensibility is hard to find a second copy of anywhere on the platform, and once it clicks, very little else scratches the same itch.

Now who should skip. If you are chasing top-tier visuals and cinematic storytelling, it will let you down: the picture is merely adequate and the plot barely registers. If you are prone to motion sickness or wired to recoil from gore, tread carefully — dismemberment and blood toggle off, but the headset-strapped intensity of swinging real weapons at full arm extension is its own barrier, and not everyone's stomach or comfort settings will keep up. Fold that long-standing jank into your expectations too: arms snag while climbing and opening doors, props occasionally behave in ways physics never intended, and the progression mode will now and then ask you to stomach a little roughness for the sake of the freedom that same physics buys you.

As for version, the answer is simple. PC on SteamVR got the full 1.0 and Crystal Hunt on June 17, 2024, the most complete experience; the standalone Nomad build on Quest did not get its own update until October 28 that year, with fidelity and performance bent to mobile hardware. Own both platforms and pick PC; own only a headset and Nomad still delivers this signature physical melee — just brace for softer visuals and a different modding path. The 8.0 overall is the honest weighting of all of it: gameplay near the top of the scale, content longevity excellent, visuals and story dragging behind, the old jank still present. It is not a balanced all-rounder but a sharp, lopsided knife — peerless at the one thing it loves, and plainly ordinary everywhere else.
