If you love Metroidvanias, this enormous castle and its shard builds will quietly double your planned playtime before you notice.

Nuestro veredicto

If you are willing to sink forty or fifty hours into a single game, this one will not turn that stretch into dead air. It is not attempting anything revolutionary; it is taking a well-worn recipe and polishing it until it slides down smooth: a map that is enormous yet orderly, combat that is traditional yet layered, content that is thick without quite collapsing into fatigue.

A wide view of the castle ramparts under a brooding sky

A familiar road, walked further

Set against Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, this feels like an attempt to walk a little further down the same road — expanding the scale and systems of that era to a size modern hardware shrugs off, letting you live inside the same structure for a longer stretch. The lineage is worn proudly rather than hidden. If you have affection for what Igarashi's earlier work established, Bloodstained reads as the deluxe, unconstrained version of that template, the one the original always seemed to be reaching for before the hardware said no.

Measured against more authorial, art-forward peers like Hollow Knight and Ori, it carries fewer sharp personal fingerprints and a little more of the reassurance of an old acquaintance. It is not the game that redefines the genre; it is the game that delivers the genre's comforts at a generous volume, with the confidence of people who clearly love the form. There is real value in that. Not every great Metroidvania needs to reinvent the wheel — sometimes you simply want the wheel built to its largest, smoothest specification, and Bloodstained is exactly that kind of object, an expert restatement of a proven idea rather than a leap into the unknown.

Who should buy in, and who should pass

The shortfalls in visuals and story will peel away a slice of pickier players — particularly anyone who treats art direction as the headline act. You will not find the next wallpaper-grade surprise here, and you are unlikely to stumble onto a scene that gets feverishly clipped and quoted. The narrative is functional, the supporting models are rough, and neither of those is going to win over a skeptic.

But if what you actually care about is the experience of returning again and again to the same castle, reworking your routes and your loadouts, Bloodstained gives it to you in abundance. Across a half-dozen outlets the scores cluster in the strong-but-not-flawless band, and the player consensus on Steam echoes it — a reliably recommended, long-burning entry rather than a once-in-a-generation event. That is a profile worth reading carefully before you buy. If you bounce off slower mid-game stretches, or if rough character models pull you out of a world, temper your expectations accordingly. If, on the other hand, you are the sort who has ever cleared a map to one hundred percent purely for the satisfaction of the number ticking over, this is a near-frictionless purchase, and the cost-to-hours ratio is hard to argue with.

The verdict

Is it worth dozens of hours? If you have any affection for the Metroidvania label itself, the answer is almost certainly yes — and very likely more than yes. You will hit some late night where you know full well that one more map screen will make you late, and you'll tell yourself just one more anyway — then watch the save timer jump another hour and mutter that this castle's halls are far too noisy to leave. That pull, more than any single number on the scorecard, is the real review. A game can be technically imperfect in a dozen small ways and still be impossible to put down, and Bloodstained is squarely in that category: the seams are visible if you look for them, but the loop underneath is strong enough that you stop looking. The rough faces fade, the thin story recedes, and what remains is a castle you keep wanting to map one room further. It is a confident, generous, lovingly traditional Metroidvania, and for its intended audience that is exactly enough — and most of them will come away feeling they got considerably more than they paid for.
