“It turns running a graveyard into pitch-black comedy: you put up headstones for the dead while quietly selling off their less valuable organs on the side. Players who love optimizing a supply chain get hooked, while anyone after a relaxed farm sim slams into its steep tech-point wall.”

Nuestro veredicto

The “dark Stardew” label still fits, but the age shows

Graveyard Keeper screenshot

Graveyard Keeper still lands because it takes one of the nastiest ideas in a cozy-management game and just runs with it. You’re not growing pumpkins and making friends here. You’re cutting up corpses, pulling out rotten organs, and squeezing every last point out of a graveyard so the whole operation makes money. That pitch-black joke is still the hook, and it’s why people still call it the dark side of Stardew Valley. Back in 2018, that was a big deal. Even now, it’s a weird little standout because so few games are willing to make the business loop this grim and this funny at the same time.

But the other thing that still defines it is the split between critic scores and player love. Metacritic sits at 69, OpenCritic lands at 65.4 with a 30% recommend rate, and that tells you critics were pretty split on it. Steam says something else entirely: 86% positive across 38,744 reviews. That gap makes sense. If you bounce off the early friction, you’ll think it’s clunky and opaque. If you push through, you start seeing why players stick with it.

This is for the spreadsheet goblins, not the cozy crowd

Here’s the blunt version: if you like planning production chains and solving systems, this game can absolutely grab you. It’s built for the kind of player who gets a weird little thrill out of making one workstation feed the next, then the next, then the next. The tech tree is split into red, green, and blue points, and the game doesn’t babysit you through it. That’s the point and the problem. Once it opens up, the crafting gets deep fast, from quarry work to engraving and all the nasty little steps in between. It’s way more layered than most farming sims, and that’s why the people who enjoy min-maxing keep coming back.

If you want something chill, though, this can be a bad time. It’s not an easy, pick-up-and-relax game. It’s the kind of thing that asks you to know where your next bottleneck is, then go fix it yourself. There’s no gentle hand-holding, and there’s a lot of running around between the graveyard, the church, and the mine. Add the stamina cap on top, and the errands start to feel like work if you’re not already invested. If you’re the kind of player who wants the warmth and ease of Stardew Valley, this is not that. This is for players who actually enjoy the grind when the grind is well structured.

Start with the base game, then decide if you want more

My advice is simple: play the base game first, and only then look at the DLC if you’re still hungry. The core package already gives you a lot of meat to chew on, and for most people that’s the right place to start. The main game sits around 35 hours, and if you end up clicking with it, the Stranger Sins, Game Of Crone, and Better Save Soul DLCs can stretch that closer to 55. That’s a solid amount of content, but you really do want to know whether you enjoy the loop before piling on more systems.

Platform-wise, I’d be careful. The PC version is the safest bet. The game’s mood is strong, and the pixel-art gothic look does a lot of heavy lifting, but the audio side is thinner than it should be, with a looping soundtrack that wears out over long sessions and no voice acting to break it up. Console versions, especially Switch, have also had performance complaints, with frame drops called out as a real drag. So if you have a choice, go PC, start with the base game, and treat the DLC as dessert. And if you’re coming in late, know that Graveyard Keeper 2 is already in the works, so this isn’t a dead end.
