A multi-protagonist interactive drama where branching QTE decisions shape character fates across rainy cityscapes and multiple endings.

Nuestro veredicto

What is left once the dating is stripped away

If you are willing to spend ten hours on a dark suspense film whose direction you get to rewrite with your own hands, Heavy Rain is still worth trying once. The point was never whether it has dated — of course it has — but how much genuinely effective material remains after the dating is accounted for. The answer is: quite a lot. The weight of the branching choices, the pressure of knowing a protagonist might be lost for good, the gloom so thick it feels almost damp on your skin — these things still work today. The game does not lean on a big open world or a complicated set of systems. It leans on relentlessly forcing you to make decisions, and in doing so it turns a story you might otherwise watch and forget into a memory that keeps asking you why you chose the way you did.

It earns its place in history, too. Heavy Rain collected recognition from BAFTA for both its storytelling and its technical innovation, and it stands as a milestone in interactive narrative — a work later designers openly built upon. That lineage is part of why it still matters: Detroit: Become Human and a long line of choice-driven dramas advanced precisely by standing on its shoulders.

There is a particular pleasure, too, in playing a game that was confident enough to let you fail forward. Heavy Rain does not pause to scold you or quietly reload when a scene goes badly; it simply absorbs the misstep and keeps moving, carrying your mistake into the next chapter as if to say this is the story you made now. That refusal to coddle is rare, and it is a large part of why the experience lingers. You finish not with the tidy satisfaction of having optimised a run, but with the uneasier feeling of having lived through a version of events that was partly your fault. Few games of any era are brave enough to leave you holding that.

Do not aim your expectations wrong

But do not point your expectations in the wrong direction. This is not a work that is especially solid at the level of play, nor one that is especially airtight at the level of script. The QTE-driven manner of progression will leave some players feeling like a slightly busier member of the audience, and the shortfalls in dialogue and voice work will keep reminding you that this is an older title carrying the marks of its era. The rule that a game over five years old simply reads differently applies here with obvious force: play it now and you will more easily spot its seams, and more easily recognise how many later interactive dramas kept walking forward from where it stopped.

So is it worth those ten hours? Yes — on one condition. The condition is that what you want is a branching, consequence-bearing, slightly clumsy suspense experience, rather than a mature and comprehensive modern game system. It is not a masterpiece, and it is absolutely not a dish everyone can stomach. The voice work is its weakest seam, the play its thinnest layer, the atmosphere and the stakes its enduring strengths. But on the specific line of interactive storytelling, it still earns the right to be played seriously at least once. A 6.5 overall is the honest reckoning: an imperfect, dated, occasionally awkward game that nonetheless leaves something real behind. Treat it as a suspense film, and it goes down far better that way.
