A high-speed platformer that makes momentum the star, a floor low enough for anyone and a P-Rank ceiling worth dozens of hours

Nuestro veredicto

Tally it all up and Pizza Tower is a game of ruthless focus — it knows exactly what it wants and, just as clearly, what it does not.

Canonized in a day — it caught the baton Nintendo let fall

Pizza Tower critical reception

The numbers first: 98 percent positive on Steam across more than sixty-five thousand reviews, an Overwhelmingly Positive rating; an OpenCritic average of 91 at a 100 percent recommend rate, parked in the Mighty tier; Metacritic 89. It cracked the list of 2023's highest-rated Steam games on day one and, by August 2024, took the seat of the highest-rated 2D platformer on the store, leaving Super Meat Boy, Celeste and Katana Zero behind it. It also took Best Game at the 2023 GameMaker Awards and earned nominations for Best Debut Indie at The Game Awards and Best Indie at the Golden Joysticks, among others.

Behind those results runs a clear bloodline. Nintendo's Wario Land series has sat dormant for years without a new entry, leaving a distinct design vacancy — that wall-bashing, transform-driven, score-over-completion side-scrolling style. Pizza Tower plants itself squarely as that series' spiritual successor, keeping the pillar-triggered timed escape and the transformation-puzzle level structure, but swapping Wario's relatively leaden handling for momentum tuned to a frictionless extreme. One line: it caught the baton Nintendo dropped, and ran faster with it.

Who should buy, who should walk, and why it resists cloning

Peppino striking a pose at the goal

So who is it for? If you love high-speed side-scrolling action, relish drilling a level into muscle memory, and have an appetite for that retro-cartoon look, Pizza Tower is close to tailor-made for you — a blind buy that will not miss. Flip it around: if what you want is a linear narrative or character progression, or you are the player who finishes once and leaves with no interest in chasing scores, it may only be five or six hours to you and will feel short. There is also the genuine soft spot of the boss fights, which lean on RNG and luck over reads rather than skill, an odd lurch for a game otherwise built on precision — anyone bothered by that should brace for it.

Set those aside, though, and what Pizza Tower can't be copied for is that get-stronger-the-faster-you-go momentum and the craft of welding it to exaggerated hand-drawn animation. Plenty of games have speed; very few make keeping the speed the central joy, and fewer still twist art, motion and feel into one indivisible thing.

That is why, more than two years past launch, it still holds the top seat among Steam's 2D platformers — not for lack of challengers, but because a design that grows together from the inside out is genuinely hard to forge. A clone can copy the wall-run, the combo timer, the escape countdown, and end up with a checklist of mechanics that somehow never catches fire. You can lift its rules; you cannot lift the thing that, once it starts running, refuses to stop and only wants another lap.
