“Spline-and-piece building freedom plus a first-person ride camera and Steam Workshop turn a theme park into something you live in and share”

Nuestro veredicto

A genre's rescuer, born on the rubble

To grasp this game's weight, start with the year it was born. In 2016 the theme-park sim was stuck in a trough; the title carrying the genre's proper name had just ended in a reputational disaster, leaving veteran fans out in the cold. Right beside that wreckage, the studio behind Frontier's earlier coaster classic produced Planet Coaster — no old logo to trade on — and used a solid building system and a living park to set the whole genre back on its feet.

A signature park panorama

That fixes its place in history: not merely a good game but the rescuer of a genre in a slump, living proof that the theme-park sim still had a road ahead of it, and a handsome one at that. An 84 on Metacritic, an 84 on OpenCritic, 91% positive on Steam — three entirely different scoring systems pointing, unusually, at the very same conclusion: this is a benchmark among its generation's building sims, not just a fan favourite. It even drew a 2017 BAFTA British Game nomination, a rare awards-grade showing for a category that the wider industry tends to overlook entirely.

Who should buy it, and who should walk away

Plainly: the target is sharp. This is for the creator who wants to build the park in their head exactly as imagined and is willing to put in the hours learning the tools. If your joy is starting from bare ground, raising a themed park brick by brick that belongs to you alone, riding the drop you designed from a first-person seat, then sharing the result to the workshop for applause — this is your heaven, and it will swallow hundreds of hours.

A player's creative park

Several kinds of player, though, should think hard about walking past. Anyone after a hardcore numbers crunch — money never runs out here, financial and logistical pressure sit light, the simulation is not deep enough to satisfy. Anyone after strong narrative and story beats — there is almost no authored tale, only atmosphere and goals you set yourself. And anyone with little interest in building who just wants to coast through easy management will find the whole weight pushed onto "creating" rather than "running." Ask yourself one question before buying: do I want to build a park, or run one?

A series benchmark and a ceiling hard to clear

In the arc of the series its position is both delicate and firmly fixed. Its sequel, Planet Coaster 2, landed in 2024 to an OpenCritic score of just 78 — clearly below the original's 84. That slip, oddly, confirms from the side how high a ceiling the original set on building freedom. Spline-plus-piece construction, the first-person ride, a mature workshop ecosystem — that combination is, to this day, one few have copied whole. This is exactly where it is hardest to replace. The rival that lost to it the same year lost on clumsy building, a litter of bugs, and a thin workshop; later arrivals, even ones with newer tech under the hood, still struggle to land "free building, lived-in riding, community sharing" all at once with the maturity this game reached back then. The 8.3 overall is the fairest read on a title that, looked at a full eight years on, remains the benchmark of its kind rather than a relic of it. If you are a creator at heart, it belongs on your wishlist even now — because what it hands you is not a finished park to manage, but a pencil that can draw any park at all, and then a stage on which to show it off.
