Pull two friends into voice chat and this one hooks you with bosses you die to, learn to read, then finally beat — it swaps Dark Souls' melee for guns and keeps the bite. Just know the loot is flat and the maps start repeating once you've rolled them enough.

Nuestro veredicto

The dark horse nobody backed that outran the field

In 2019, nobody expected Remnant: From the Ashes to land. No big-publisher marketing muscle, a pitch that read like a Frankenstein splice. And yet: roughly two months out it cleared a million copies, the base game crossed 1.7 million inside a year, and by the end of 2021 the series had passed 3 million in total sales. That haul blew past Gunfire Games' internal expectations — the team itself admitted to being genuinely surprised. It is the textbook word-of-mouth dark horse, one player pulling in the next, becoming one of 2019's loudest sleeper hits.

That commercial success was not luck.

A Metacritic 78, an OpenCritic 77.5 inside the Strong tier with a 70% recommend rate, and a Steam standing that still holds at 84% positive across more than 46,000 reviews — that is a profile of solid, time-tested, and decidedly not a masterpiece. It never punched its ticket to the 90s club, but it won a base of diehards who genuinely re-run it. For a new IP, that mid-high-score, long-loved standing is harder to earn than a fleeting high.

What is striking in hindsight is how the sales curve kept climbing well after the launch noise faded. A million in two months is a strong opening; crossing 1.7 million on the base game inside a year, then 3 million across the series by late 2021, is the signature of a game that retained players and converted them into evangelists. That is the economics of word-of-mouth, not a marketing blitz — exactly the kind of slow-burn loyalty a publisher cannot manufacture.

Who should make this trip, and who should steer clear

So, to you: is this game for you or not? If you have a friend or two to play with, if you relish the loop of dying to a boss over and over, finally reading it, and beating it together, and if you are willing to sink time into grinding mods and assembling your build, it is practically tailor-made for you — three-player co-op is its full form, and the fun and chemistry live right there.

Three players coordinating against a world boss

Flip it around: if you are the run-and-gun type, or you only want to follow one linear thread to the credits and leave, it will likely leave you frustrated and bored. Its difficulty will school you and its content fills out through repeated grinding — two things that land squarely on your sore spots. Especially the lone wolf set on soloing: the spikes get sharper and some encounters are unfriendly to one player, so brace for it. In one line: this is for the player willing to do homework for a hard fight and drag a friend in to grind it out, not for anyone after an easy ride.

Buy the complete edition — and the series it left behind

If you decide to dive in, there is one very practical version note: go straight for the complete edition with both expansions. As covered, the base story is a thin skeleton that needs Subject 2923 to flesh out, while Swamps of Corsus' Survival Mode adds a real long tail to the core loop. Count both in and you get the full shape of this game, not a bare base with half a story and a chunk of play missing.

Worth closing on is what it left behind. It was precisely because this Souls-with-guns-meets-procedural-generation experiment was validated by the market that it directly spawned a sequel — Remnant 2 arrived in 2023 and polished the odd idea into a proper series banner. Looking back, the place of Remnant: From the Ashes is not just a fun co-op shooter; it is a starting point that proved a certain splice could work. It is imperfect — the loot is flat, the repetition is real. But with a brave idea and a rock-solid combat backbone, it cut a path nobody else had walked in 2019, and walked itself into a series. For the right player, the trip is worth it.
