“The dark finale of the rebooted trilogy turns whole tombs into spatial puzzles and combat into jungle stealth, putting exploration back at the series' core”

Nuestro veredicto

A steady finale, a slightly quieter echo

Shadow's overall mood

Settle the ledger first. Shadow holds a 77 on Metacritic, an 80 aggregate on OpenCritic, and an 84% positive rate on Steam across nearly 70,000 reviews, flagged Very Positive. That is a solid "generally favourable" with no wreckage, and it does sit a touch below the critical highs of the first two chapters. The game has sold past 8.9 million units worldwide; it started slow at launch, found its footing over the long haul, and quietly became one of the series' durable evergreens.

Drop it back into the coordinates of 2018 and it shared the calendar with giants — a God of War that redefined fatherhood, a Red Dead Redemption 2 that pushed the open world to its ceiling. Against company like that, Shadow never seized the loudest conversation; its voice got drowned out.

The funny thing is how, looking back now, the very purity people overlooked — the willingness to slow down, to turn whole tombs into machines, to make combat a matter of jungle stealth — only grows rarer. While most action-adventures keep sprinting toward faster, flashier and more open, Shadow's patience, its readiness to hand the running time over to puzzles and stealth, is the colour that makes it hardest to replace.

Who should buy it, who should walk

Lara's expedition

Plainly: if you relish dropping alone into a black tomb, staring down a wall of gears until you read how it runs and bend it to your will; if you like crouching mud-soaked in the grass and treating every fight as a riddle to take apart; if you have the patience for an exotic civilisation and a slow-burn expedition — then Shadow is a dish you will struggle to find a substitute for in recent years. It is built precisely for that crowd, the ones willing to slow down and think.

Flip it around, though. If what you want from an action game is snappy gunfights and bullets flying, if you cannot stand stopping to solve things and have no patience for a slow-burn plot, Shadow will most likely leave you fidgeting. From the ground up it is coaxing you to shoot less and think and sneak more, the polar opposite of a pure shooter; force the two together and you both end up uncomfortable, and the game will keep gently insisting you do it its way.

As for which version, point yourself straight at the Definitive Edition — full story, all seven challenge tombs, every outfit and weapon, and the multi-platform ports, the cleanest way to walk this dark finale end to end with nothing missed. Set against its sibling Rise of the Tomb Raider, Rise leans toward the open-world, base-and-checklist mould, while Shadow pulls the focus firmly back to tomb puzzles and jungle stealth — purer exploration, a darker, more grown-up tone. It may not be the loudest chapter of the trilogy, but it is the one that does the word "exploration" most like a Tomb Raider game should. As the endpoint of Lara's coming-of-age, it holds the line, and it earns the name on the box. Years on, with the noise of its launch window long faded, what is left is a confident, atmospheric, puzzle-first adventure that knew exactly what it wanted to be — and a Lara who, for once, has to live with what she has done.
