Nuestro veredicto
Skul is the kind of game you find yourself defending the longer you play it — an 8.0 overall. It never reaches the altitude of reshaping its genre, but it polishes every load-bearing part until they assemble into a dependable little machine for unwinding.
Where it sits in the rogue-lite top tier

You will reflexively shelve it next to Dead Cells and Hades, and that instinct is correct. The triangle is also the fastest way to understand it: Dead Cells wins on the elegance of its exploration and weapon feel, Hades wins on narrative density and character, and Skul's differentiating ace is the head-swap — two characters carried at once, swapped on the fly — which is the one thing neither of the others can hand you. Its case is not made in a single opening blow; it eases you into warm water a degree at a time. Fast sidescrolling action, build depth that runs deep enough to keep mining, and the grunt-kills-the-heroes role-flip stack into three pillars holding up a loop that turns very steadily.
The critics agree almost to a word. The Strong tier and top-eleven-percent placing on OpenCritic, the Metacritic 80, the 93 percent Steam rating all point at the same verdict — a high-but-not-perfect work that is full marks on mechanics and merely good on content.
The shortfalls are plain: thin writing, real luck swings, fatigue over a long grind. None of them adds up to "do not buy"; they read more like a spec sheet telling you in advance whether you are the player it is hunting for. Read the sheet honestly and the purchase makes itself.
Who should buy, who should walk, and how to buy

Buy without hesitation if you are this person: you love fast sidescrolling action, you live for random builds and multi-run grind loops, and you can shrug off a little luck variance. If your reference points are Dead Cells or Hades and you are happy to drill a swap-combo until it sings, Skul hands you the role-swapping thrill neither of them offers — and if your budget is tight and you simply want a solid sidescrolling action rogue-lite in the hands, it is close to a blind-buy on value alone.
Walk away just as clearly if you crave a thick long-form story, want fresh events every single run, or lose all interest the moment a loop starts repeating. Skul reserves the whole stage for combat and building; its plot will never satisfy the story crowd, and forcing the purchase only ends in disappointment. As for how to buy — now is the best moment there has ever been. After nearly four years of free updates the base game is the story-complete, content-rich final form; grab the base on a discount and stop there. The paid Mythology Pack is for veterans already in love and hungry for more high-end skulls to tinker with; no newcomer needs to bolt it on from the start. It does one thing exceptionally well and the rest merely passably, but if that one thing is exactly what you came for, it is a machine well worth keeping in the library for the long haul.

First of all, bear in mind that this review has been written while the game is still in early access, so it will probably (and hopefully) be improved in the upcoming months. Skul: The Hero Slayer is a rogue-lite dungeon crawler where you take the role of an "evil" skeleton goon who sets to rescue the Demon King, who has been captured by some Hero. The main gimmick in the game is your ability to swap between skulls, which will provide you with different attacks/skills, hence changing gameplay. As you advance in the run, you'll encounter different skulls / items / money (to spend in shops later) that will allow you to set up your build. You will also earn meta-currency (quartz) that you can then spend on a meta-progression upgrade tree that will make future runs easier. While the game shows great potential, it is very evident it still needs some work and a lot of polishing, since it faces a serious number of problems that really hinder the gameplay experience. Some of these are: 1. The items you find in your run will grant you a passive effect + two different "boons" from a given set. Stacking more than one boon of the same kind will significantly increase the effect of the boon, and this is a pretty important part of a succesful build. However, you're limited to nine item slots, items are sort of hard to come by, and the pool of items is rather small, making the stacking of boons almost impossible in many occasions. 2. Like I just said, the item pool feels pretty small. I've played for 10 hours, and I feel like I've seen them all. I haven't come across a new items in a couple days. Also, there seems to be a high ratio of items that increase your magic attack, but the number of skulls that are magic-based is very small. 3. Or so I think because, you see, the game doesn't tell you whether your attacks are based on physical or magic damage, so you have to figure out yourself, Sometimes, it's obviously magic-baced (like Alchemist or Archmage skulls) but many times it's confusing, and this leads me to stick with melee skulls, just because I know that I'm fine boosting physical damage. 4. The metaprogression feels almost irrelevant. It's sort of grindy-ish but the upgrades ypou get are so minimal that you'll hardly notice most of them. 5. The game doesn't feel very balanced. Most enemies are just sponges, and they just get "spongier" as you go deeper into your run. As you get to the third world, you'll face a difficulty spike that you'll most likely not be able to survive unless RNG provided you with a godly build and good skulls. 6. Minibosses also need rebalancing. In world 1, you'll face agains one of them out of a pool of six possible enemies. That's ok but in world 2 you'll fight two out of the six, and then three in world three. Having three minibosses on screen attacking at the same time with the same AI and timing as an one-on-one duel from world 1 with no changes whatsoever makes no sense. It just lead to brainless button-mashing most times and it becomes specially unfair when the Cleric is among those tree, because by then those minibosses will be huge damage-sponges and she just keeps healing everyone, so you can barely deal any damage. 7. And last, but most importantly, the game gets very old very fast: almost no variety in enemies, biomes or bosses, no unlockables, no achievements... After ten hours, I've beaten the game a couple times and I don't really feel any drive to keep playing (this is from someone who has put 100+ hours into Binding of Isaac, and Neon Abyss; and 500+ into Enter the Gungeon). The obscurity about the stats and the very limited item pool leads to runs feeling samey very often, so it's easy to get tired. In short, the game could be great but in its current state, I cannot recommend it in a world where Dead Cells and Hades exist. Unless you've played the heck out of those games and are looking for something new, there's no reason to get this game at this moment.
