“If you're a Star Wars fan who wants to command a whole galaxy's civil war by hand, this collection plus its bottomless mod scene will keep you busy for a very long time.”

Nuestro veredicto

The 79-to-97% Reputation Curve Tells You What This Game Really Is

Star Wars: Empire at War - Gold Pack screenshot

Star Wars: Empire at War - Gold Pack is one of those games that aged sideways. Back in the day, critics basically said, “Yeah, this is good, but don’t lose your mind.”

Metacritic landed at 79, GameSpot gave it 8.1, IGN gave it 7.6. Solid scores. Not legendary scores. But then you look at Steam now, and it’s sitting at 97% positive across 35,592 reviews, with an Overwhelmingly Positive tag. That gap says a lot.

Here’s the thing: critics judged it like a 2006 RTS. And as a pure RTS, yeah, it has problems. Space combat is flat. Literally. You don’t get that full three-dimensional fleet dance you might hope for. The galactic AI can be pretty clueless. The visuals look old because, well, they are old. And if you’re here for sharp, competitive micro where every unit wiggle matters, this is not that game.

But as a Star Wars strategy fantasy? It still hits. Petroglyph, built by former Westwood people, clearly brought that Command & Conquer bloodline with them. You can feel it in the pace and readability. Compared with Command & Conquer: Red Alert 2, Empire at War is less of a tight competitive machine, but it gives you something Red Alert 2 doesn’t: the feeling that you’re actually steering a galactic civil war. Fleets above planets, troops on the ground, Star Destroyers showing up like bad news with engines. That fantasy carries it hard.

Gold Pack Is The Version To Buy, And The Mods Are Why It Won’t Die

If you’re playing this today, don’t overthink the version. Get Star Wars: Empire at War - Gold Pack on Steam. That’s the clean pick because it bundles the base game with the Forces of Corruption expansion, and that expansion matters. It adds the Zann Consortium as a third faction, and the corruption mechanics give the whole galactic layer a nastier, more underworld-flavored twist. You’re not just picking Rebels or Empire. You can play dirty.

And honestly, the mod scene is the real reason this thing is still alive nearly 20 years later. Thrawn’s Revenge and other long-running projects have basically turned Empire at War into a platform for Star Wars strategy nerds. That’s not a small bonus. That’s the difference between “cool old game you revisit for a weekend” and “wait, why did I just lose another 40 hours?” The base quality is strong enough to support that, and the community has been keeping it fed for ages.

The Gold Pack also gives you the best overall package for the money because the game’s biggest strength is variety over precision. You’re not buying this for one perfect campaign story. The RTS storytelling is light, and if you want deep character drama, go somewhere else. You’re buying it because you want to push fleets around the galaxy, drop AT-ATs onto battlefields, and hear Frank Klepacki’s music slam into that classic John Williams Star Wars energy until every fight feels bigger than it mechanically is.

If You Want Galactic Command, Yes; If You Want Hardcore RTS, Careful

Star Wars: Empire at War - Gold Pack screenshot

My score for the overall package is 7.8 out of 10, and I think that’s the honest sweet spot. Not because it’s mediocre. It’s not. It’s because Empire at War is brilliant at one specific thing and pretty uneven outside that lane. If you’re a Star Wars fan who wants light strategy, big atmosphere, and the feeling of commanding a whole conflict without needing 300 actions per minute, this is absolutely your kind of game.

The best part is the two-layer setup. Galactic Conquest lets you make the big calls, then battles break out in space or on land. That’s the hook. It makes the war feel connected. You’re not just clicking through isolated missions. You’re deciding where to build, where to attack, what planets matter, and when to commit your big toys. For Star Wars fans, that loop is still weirdly unmatched. There just isn’t another strategy game that fills this exact slot as cleanly.

But if you’re a hardcore RTS veteran chasing elite tactical depth, brutal balance, perfect pathing, and high-level micro duels, the catch is obvious. Space battles don’t give you enough room to outplay stronger fleets. The three-faction balance is arguable. The AI on the galactic map can make baffling choices. So yeah, go in with the right expectations. Empire at War is not the sharpest RTS ever made. It’s the Star Wars strategy game that got the fantasy right, and thanks to the Gold Pack plus mods, it’s only gotten easier to recommend with age.
