Personally, I felt quite disappointed with the story. THE ROOTTREES ARE DEAD IS A MISLEADING TITLE. They could be alive and it wouldn't matter. The game is NOT about investigating their deaths. The gameplay is generally good, except for a few points I'll mention later, but the real problem is that the family's story isn't interesting. The mystery is small and predictable. Regarding the Story: The game starts strong because you investigate from the oldest generations to the newest. The older generations have left more of a mark on the world; they have different professions, different points of view, and more secrets and scandals. As you approach the end, you start investigating the youngest generations, who are almost all students and simply haven't lived long enough to have done anything interesting. This makes each generation more boring than the last. Regarding the Mechanics: The mechanics are on the right track for me, but they have some inconsistencies and need some improvements to feel truly polished. The search engine is fickle with what it accepts as a search term. As others have mentioned, it works with nicknames for some, with full names for others, and sometimes it seems to fail even after copying and pasting a name. Secondly, it's really inconvenient not being able to copy names from the family tree. And it's completely unnecessary to have to search for books by author and title; you usually get both from the same source. This means you have to copy and paste twice, and that's it. I couldn't play the DLC. Towards the end, I was already tired of how boring these characters were and how convoluted the story was becoming, with names and pseudonyms, some characters who have three different names. Even after making some pretty negative comments about the story of this game, I'll still keep an eye on the developers. They have a lot of potential. And the translation into other languages and the regional pricing are much appreciated.Ver másVer menos

I feel very conflicted over this game. I thoroughly enjoy and have done similar type of archival or genealogical research IRL. The first half of the first part of this game was an incredible experience. The spell started to wear off towards the revelation in the first half, but my suspicions were correct and I did enjoy a lot the retelling of the full story by a certain key person. I certainly used the hint system to finish this first part. During this whole time I even fantasized with starting similar games; it is really an incredible feeling that this game can create in a person. When I started the second part, everything became alien for me. The search history was deleted but the game counts whatever you search beforehand (see the achievements for listening to all musical evidence, for example), and even when mentioned, it is not inmediately clear that you -will- be revisiting old pieces of evidence. Why? Because they are basically removed from your previously existing pile of evidence. In some games the difficulty can raise by an arithmetic rate, in some others it can be incremental; the increase in difficulty of almost all deductions in this second part is just unexplained, not telegraphed, unjust. It is extremely difficult, even if it appears engrossing and rewarding in the first part, to keep every thread of information in your head for every "possibly-blood relative". You then have to connect every thread to arrive to needed conclussions with an UI that just can not keep up with increasing amounts of data. It is only natural to have data that will interconnect, even across different family branches, but the tools the game gives you are just not enough for this second part. We welcome difficulty when it is fair. I want to make it clear that I do not necessarily agree with other people's opinions of "the plot does not revolve around some misterious/exoteric/fantastic elements". I want to aplaud the developers for really capturing my attention and I will always remember the sense of wonder that I had in the first part of this game. I also appreciate that the developers hired actual artists to replace the AI art; BRAVO for that. This game is unique and is already creating a niche new wave of likeminded titles, and that is great. I think the contentions that I have with the second part of the game will be solved with iteration. I leave a negative review as I will not hurt this game's reputation that is already well stablished, and I just wanted to reflect on my personal feelings about this game. Overall it is a great game that, sadly, wears off fast.Ver másVer menos
