Is It Worth $99? This *Dune*-Inspired Fan Is Trending

I usually find even 80-hour JRPGs too short, but this time I want to talk about a new product that doesn’t really feel like a game, yet has a strong “item” vibe. Dyson recently launched a bladeless handheld fan called the HushJet Mini Cool, priced at $99, or about 680 RMB. From the name alone, it sounds like some kind of side-quest equipment; from its actual appearance, it looks more like a rare collectible dropped from a sci-fi world, instantly sparking people’s urge to talk about it.

The product’s biggest selling point is still the sense of safety that comes with its bladeless design. Dyson has hidden all the internal components away, so in everyday use you don’t have to worry as much about scratching your fingers, and it’s less likely to catch clothing or accessories. For people who commute often, go out with kids, or like tossing a fan into their bag in summer, this design feels a lot like an accessory in a JRPG that directly grants immunity to negative status effects—it may not look flashy, but it adds a lot to the actual experience.

On top of that, Dyson is also putting special emphasis on noise control this time. Its unique shape allows the product to keep noise as low as possible even at a high speed of 65,000 RPM, making it more ear-friendly; to further neutralize high-frequency noise, it also uses a “mi”-shaped air outlet. It sounds a bit like the kind of structural optimization you’d see in the crystal machinery of Final Fantasy—focused on both function and design language. But once that idea made its way into a real-world product, people’s associations online went in a rather unexpected direction.

Some people complained that the front air outlet looks like a lamprey’s mouth, and once that comparison gets into your head, it really is hard to unsee. Quite a few others also think the overall appearance strongly resembles the sandworms from Dune, with some even mistaking it at first glance for some kind of collaboration merch. Honestly, this kind of discussion only proves that it has a distinct identity. Among a sea of portable fans, it’s not the kind of forgettable generic model you glance at and move on from—it’s more like a rare enemy in a monster compendium that makes you click in just to read the description.

That said, the price is unfortunately still a hurdle you can’t avoid. At $99, or about 680 RMB, it’s clearly not taking the value-for-money route in the handheld fan category, but instead follows the classic Dyson formula of design premium. If what you care most about is safety, quiet operation, and recognizability—and you’re willing to pay for industrial design—then it does have real appeal. But if all you want is a basic way to cool off in summer, this budget is enough to let you browse plenty of similar products, or even upgrade from “portable” to a completely different cooling solution.

What’s worth noting is that the recent discussion around products like this is no longer just about whether “the airflow is strong enough,” but about safety, noise control, and visual design all competing at once. Dyson clearly wants to turn the handheld fan into a highly recognizable personal device this time—something like a character-exclusive weapon that people remember at a glance. As for whether you’d actually pay for it, my advice is simple: if you think of it as a high-end designer home appliance, the logic makes sense; but if you judge it as just an ordinary little fan, then $99 will probably be a hard price for most people to willingly click “buy” on.
