Clair Obscur: Expedition 33Fetching price~ $59.9981 Games Make It to the Finish Line! *Clair Obscur: Expedition 33* Advances to the BIG Finals
A couple of days ago, I was browsing indie game news, and it felt like discovering another unmarked path at the edge of the map. I casually clicked into the 2026 BIG Festival nominees list, and the more I read, the more hooked I got. For someone like me who clears every last question mark in open-world games, the awards themselves are one thing, but what’s really exciting is seeing the entire indie game landscape expand outward yet another ring through this list.

This time, it’s the officially announced shortlist for the 2026 gamescom latam BIG Festival. It has long been regarded as the world’s largest indie game awards event, and this year both the scale of submissions and regional coverage set new records: developers from 75 countries and regions took part, with works from four continents all flowing in. Brazil alone submitted 451 games, ranking first; the Americas received 608 entries in total, making it the liveliest region, while Europe came in second with 197.
Even more interestingly, the list also includes newly added or specially highlighted participating regions such as the Åland Islands, Andorra, Brunei, and Oman. It feels like continuously zooming in on Google Maps and realizing that it’s not just the main roads that are bustling—even many small corners that usually go unnoticed are beginning to grow their own gaming languages.
In the end, 81 games made it into the BIG Awards finals. All of them will be showcased on-site at gamescom latam and compete for the final prizes. The organizers have scheduled two award ceremonies, on the opening day of April 29 and on May 3 respectively; the full 2026 gamescom latam event will take place in São Paulo, Brazil, from April 29 to May 3. Beyond the awards, development teams will also be able to present their work on-site, network and collaborate, and expand business opportunities—and that part is actually crucial. What indie games fear most is not a lack of people making them, but having no path to visibility after they’re made.

Judging from the nominations, Ether & Iron, Keep Driving, MIO: Memories in Orbit, and TetherGeist each received 4 nominations, making them the most solid frontrunners of this year’s lineup. Their teams are Seismic Squirrel, YCJY Games, Douze Dixièmes, and O. and Co. Games, respectively. On the other hand, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 was nominated for both Best Audio and Best Game. Although its total number of nominations isn’t the highest, the fact that it secured a spot in the core “Best Game” category already gives it considerable weight.
Here I want to add a broader trend judgment: lists like this are increasingly becoming a “world map” of indie games. They’re not just for judging awards—they also serve as navigation for players. Looking at it this way, the future competitive edge of indie games won’t lie only in art style or gameplay gimmicks, but in who can twist their own culture, narrative temperament, and playability into one complete world. Even if it’s not a pure open world, as long as it gives players the urge to “go a little farther and see what’s there,” it has a chance to be remembered.

If you’re the kind of person who likes digging for hidden gems in event lineups, then this year’s BIG Festival is well worth following. The reason is simple: hundreds of showcased games will appear in one concentrated burst, alongside new reveals, brand and publisher activities, and interactive content for players. For ordinary players, this is a window for building a wishlist early; for content creators, it’s more like a large-scale map expedition. Rather than keeping my eyes only on the main roads laid out by major studios, I’m actually more excited about these new works emerging from different regions—because the scenery that truly stays with people is often found beyond the map.
