Is a new *God of War* really on the way? Could this April showcase be the one?
When a showcase is still only at the “might happen” stage, what truly reaches players’ attention first is often not the work itself, but a mood: like the lights dimming before a movie begins, the screen still black, yet the audience has already started guessing whether the protagonist will step out from behind the door. The discussion surrounding Sony’s April State of Play is roughly in that kind of phase, and the name being pushed to center stage is God of War.

At present, the more widely circulated claim is that Sony plans to hold a new State of Play on April 16, and that this presentation was originally understood by outsiders to lean toward a third-party lineup rather than having Sony’s first-party blockbusters take the spotlight. However, when the Insider Gaming editorial team discussed the matter on a recent blog podcast, Tom Henderson offered a more intriguing clue: he had heard from different sources last month that a new God of War title would be announced soon, with the timing also falling in April. From another angle, if this information is accurate, then the idea of it being a “purely third-party” event would itself be called into question.

From a narrative perspective, what makes this rumor most interesting is not “whether there will be a new title,” but “whose story this new title might tell.” According to the previously circulated rumors cited in the article, the project is linked to Cory Barlog’s earlier sci-fi-themed new IP, while also saying the protagonist would be Faye, Kratos’ second late wife. That combination feels a bit like transplanting the familiar family-trauma structure of the God of War series into a new work with a sharper temperament and a stronger action focus; and the claim that its style is closer to Devil May Cry also suggests it may no longer continue entirely along the weighty, subdued epic path of God of War Ragnarök.

Unfortunately, all of the current information still remains under the shadow of rumors and speculation. The article also clearly notes that there is still uncertainty surrounding this State of Play, and before any official announcement is made, nothing can be treated as final. For that very reason, it is more appropriate to view this as an observation of the direction the wind is blowing, rather than a cause for early celebration. Sony, of course, is not without the possibility of holding a separate presentation, but based on the analysis available so far, that does not seem especially likely. So if there really is a show on April 16, it would indeed be a relatively fitting window for such a reveal.

But the deeper question is that players now look forward to God of War not merely to see a character wield a weapon, but to see whether this franchise can still tell new relationships, new wounds, and new forks in fate. If the new title really does make Faye the protagonist, then its greatest value would not lie in the “change of lead” itself, but in whether it can turn a character who has so far existed mostly in the memories of others into someone who truly stands on her own. Judging from broader trends, Sony has placed increasing emphasis in recent years on the extensibility of character-driven storytelling, and from that perspective, it would not be surprising for God of War to continue expanding its world and cast. What will truly determine its quality is whether it avoids turning a past that ought to be complex into nothing more than a supplemental short story made up of setting labels. For players who care about story, the best advice right now is actually very simple: don’t rush to place your bets on rumors. Wait for Sony’s official move in April, and then see whether this is truly a new chapter capable of bearing the weight of the series, or merely a shadow inflated in advance by speculation.
