S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of ChornobylFetching price~ $59.99S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 studio denies rumor Xbox fully funded development
Financial rumors around S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl have picked up momentum, and GSC Game World has now sent an official statement to multiple outlets denying the claim that Xbox fully funded the game's development. The story started after studio founder Sergey Grigorovich said on a podcast that Xbox's payment for console exclusivity and day-one XGP access exceeded the game's development cost, meaning the game was profitable before launch.

The likely source of the mix-up is straightforward: a narrower claim got inflated. Grigorovich's reported point was that Xbox paid more than the development cost for console-exclusive rights and day-one XGP inclusion. Some coverage then recast that as a far larger claim: that Xbox had funded the entire development of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl.
GSC Game World has now drawn a firmer line. In its official statement, the studio said Grigorovich has already left the company. It also said he was not involved in the partnership negotiations between S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 and Xbox, and did not work on the game itself. Because of that, GSC said his comments cannot reflect the real situation behind the project.

Funding is the central issue. According to GSC, the budget for S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl came from multiple sources. Most of the money was provided by the studio's current owner, Maksym Krippa, rather than by the Xbox partnership. That version is less dramatic than the viral one, but it also sounds more like how a real game project is usually financed.
Development context matters too. GSC said the game was made during the Russia-Ukraine conflict, a period in which the team faced one of the industry's most severe challenges. Against that backdrop, the idea that the game was "profitable before release" should not be treated as proof that development was simple, easy, or free of pressure. Those are different things.

For players, day-one XGP access remains a major advantage. It lowers the barrier for anyone curious about S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2, especially players who want to try its wasteland atmosphere, exploration, story, and weirder emergent moments before deciding how much more time to invest. It also gives the game a stronger chance to remain in the conversation as players trade discoveries and arguments.
The takeaway is simple. If you were already interested in this kind of post-apocalyptic experience, follow the game itself, not the funding gossip. GSC says the team is currently focused on a major update for S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl and the first large story DLC, with more details to be announced soon. If all you care about is the funding rumor, the official position is now clear: GSC Game World denies that Xbox fully funded the project.

As a late Game Pass sampler, I get why people fixate on that payment exceeding costs, but multiple funding sources makes the situation feel less dramatic.
The distinction matters: a big Game Pass/exclusivity check can make launch safer without meaning Xbox paid every bill, and I’m more curious how the major update lands.
Yeah, I’m with you on waiting for the update; the funding clarification is useful, but player feedback after the next patch and first story DLC matters more to me.
