DLSS 5 Arrives on RTX 50 With NBA 2K27 Launch

Nvidia says DLSS 5 launches at 12:00 PM Beijing time on September 4 — that's 9:00 PM Pacific on September 3 — with NBA 2K27 as its debut title. The rollout covers GeForce RTX 50-series desktop GPUs, laptops, and GeForce NOW cloud streaming; older cards are not supported.

At the heart of DLSS 5 is 3D-guided neural rendering, an AI pass that fills in lighting, shadow, and surface detail rather than just multiplying frames. Nvidia is giving developers finer dials this time: structure and tone intensity can be tuned independently, and they can even specify the areas the AI should prioritize. It is less a raw FPS boost than a visual polish layer — which also means extra compute cost and a hard generational floor.

Performance numbers follow the familiar Nvidia script. With the full DLSS 5 suite turned on, an RTX 5090 pushes NBA 2K27 to 370 FPS at 4K, while an RTX 5060 hits 258 FPS at 1080p. The efficiency curve is steep: since the March reveal, the model has gotten roughly five times faster, dropping the minimum spec from two RTX 5090s to a single RTX 5060.

The speed-up is real, but the catch is the same as always. DLSS 5 isn't a free driver update for existing hardware; it's locked to the RTX 50 generation.

Showcasing it first in NBA 2K27 still feels like an odd fit. A yearly basketball sim isn't where most players go to judge a generational jump in image quality, and a 258 FPS readout won't erase the cost of a new GPU for mainstream buyers.

GeForce NOW support gives cloud subscribers a way in, but Nvidia clearly wants the local RTX 50 experience to be the headline. For new 50-series owners this is a nice extra; for RTX 40 users, it's a nudge toward the checkout page. Wait for side-by-side footage in NBA 2K27 before pulling the trigger.
