Path of Exile 2 Max-Level Characters Deleted, Free Passive Points for Everyone?

In Path of Exile 2's Dawn of the Hunt update, streamer Carn reached level 100 in Solo Self-Found, discovered a hidden chamber, and accepted a warning that said entering would permanently delete his character. In front of tens of thousands of viewers, his Warrior was sacrificed: locked out forever, but rewarded with the unique server title "First Decree Martyr" and a permanent spot at the top of the ladder. Hours later, ResurrectGodAura did the same in the regular mode, unlocking the matching server-wide benefit there too.

My first reaction was less hype than dread. A max-level character is not a small thing to throw away. For hardcore players, that kind of sacrifice carries real weight. For more casual players, even reading the prompt sounds stressful, yet it is exactly the kind of story you cannot stop following once it starts.

The key point is that this is not just a stunt. It links one player's loss directly to a reward for everyone else. After Carn made the sacrifice, he returned to the same spot on an alt and found that the chamber had turned into a glowing orb. Every player on Solo Self-Found servers could then claim one free passive skill point. That is a remarkable design choice: one person pays the highest possible price, and the whole server benefits.

It also gives real weight to what GGG had said earlier about filling the new version with hidden content. Looking at this reveal now, that promise clearly was not just marketing. More than that, it was taken to an extreme. Action RPGs are full of loot grinds, stat chasing, and world-first races. A system where one player has to delete a top-end character so everyone else gets a bonus is still almost unheard of in the genre. It is no surprise that some players are already wondering whether future seasonal level races could turn into a contest to become the first martyr.

The limitation is obvious, though. Players who can reach 100 are not typical players; they are the small group willing to invest serious time and patience. So while the reward is shared across the full server, the actual cost is still paid by the people at the very top. For most players, it is dramatic to watch and much harder to imagine doing themselves.

If you are only loosely following Path of Exile 2, my advice is not to let moments like this set the wrong expectations. What is exciting here is the community witnessing a hidden system get triggered together, like watching the community uncover one of the game's systems in real time. If you mostly want an ARPG to dip into after work, it makes more sense to treat this as a game still adding surprises before it leaves early access later this year, not as a prompt to chase level 100 and make it a second job.
