Valve's New Controller May Launch First, Console VR Still on Hold
On April 24, Valve's official sales channel Komodo Station quietly listed a product page for the Steam Controller. The timing is telling: that long-delayed hardware trio might be getting unbundled.

Last year Valve postponed the entire hardware plan due to critical memory component shortages, stating at the time that the Steam Machine console, Steam Frame VR headset, and controller would launch together. The memory issue remains unresolved, so Valve's taking the pragmatic route: ship what's ready. Controllers demand minimal memory and pose lower technical barriers—releasing them first generates revenue while giving players something tangible.

Valve's recent promotional videos only show the controller with PC and Steam Deck setups, with zero mention of the console or VR hardware. If a synchronized launch were still planned, cross-promotion would be inevitable. This selective marketing reads more like damage control for upcoming delays.
Industry observers increasingly doubt the three devices will ship simultaneously. For Steam ecosystem veterans, a controller-first release isn't necessarily bad—it allows early adaptation to the new input feel. The real prize remains the Steam Machine console, but that living room Elden Ring experience will have to wait a bit longer.
