After voicing Zelda for years, she actually learned Hylian script during her coffee breaks.
There's a kind of dedication that belongs only to actors and their roles. In an exclusive interview with IGN, Patricia Summersett shared that while researching Chronicles of Hyrule, she became captivated by the Hylian script font from Twilight Princess — not in a casual way, but in the sense of realizing "this is an alphabet you can actually learn," and then, bit by bit, over cups of coffee, she mastered it. Now she uses Hylian script in notes to friends, as if it were the most unremarkable part of everyday life.

The voice actress who has voiced Princess Zelda in more The Legend of Zelda titles than anyone else speaks about her relationship with the character with a sincerity that is difficult to imitate. Her three favorite entries are Breath of the Wild, Ocarina of Time, and Twilight Princess — the last of which is divisive among players, though she clearly doesn't concern herself with that divide.

On the narrative front, most noteworthy is her interpretation of the relationship between Zelda and Link. Summersett believes the power of that relationship lies precisely in its ambiguity: even if there is a romantic undercurrent, it is never stated outright. The deep friendship and sense of protection between the two continues to evolve across the series, always remaining open-ended.

She specifically cautions against reading too much into the idea of "unrequited love" — the two can be friends, warrior companions, princess and knight, lovers, or kindred spirits who may never come together romantically yet are destined for a lifelong bond. Pinning the relationship to any single definition diminishes it. From another angle, this may be precisely why the series has continued to resonate emotionally across decades: it leaves enough space in its character relationships for different people to fill in with their own experiences.

As for the upcoming live-action The Legend of Zelda film, Summersett is just as curious as any fan, and her most pressing question is: will Link — to be played by actor Bo Bragason — actually speak?
