TL:DR Chapter 1: It's great ! We're so baaack Chapter 2: Absolute peak. Chapter 3: What the ♥♥♥♥ happened ? Chapter 4: Meh, that's alright. Chapter 5: It's slightly better than 3 and 4 Review with details I booted up Steam back just for this game, I like Deltarune... But what went wrong with Chapter 3 ? I don't understand why it's this short ? I could say the same for Chapter 4 for this point, but the issue with Chapter 3 is that it wasn't really enjoyable, repetitive, main characters weren't really great, doesn't even stand out in comparison with other basic encounters... I don't really get why the secret boss was locked so early too, forcing you to start over the entire chapter or to load an older save if you had one. One mistake lock you out for a big content, unlike the others where you can still back track and find the way to it. Story wise, Chapter 3 feels like a filler. The ending of it would have been a better opening for Chapter 4 to be honnest. I hope it'll have its importance later in the main story, or else, this part was just filling a hole. Stop coping about Tenna, he's not interesting, just a person being toxic because of loneliness, that doesn't excuse his behavior. Chapter 4 is really good tho, but a little bit repetitive in some areas. The Jack O'lantern part is really unbalanced, it's either cheese it with items that gives you TP, or make your eyes bleed to see where you need to go for several minutes, gave me an headache. I think the main problem is visibility. Overhaul, it needs balance at some points, some stuff are just getting too quick for a player to react and win in a first time play. Sometimes it really feels unfair. When you need luck in a fight rather than just learning the partern, it's not great at all Would recommend either to wait the full release or sales, 25$ is too much for so little. (Edit) I listen to the whole OST of Chapter 3-4 again, and... Nothing really stand out as much as in Chapiter 1 and 2, it's still good but... Not what we used to have: good banger in all kind of ways, without being reprises of song already made. Raise your bat is great, but being the lone one doesn't push me to listen to the full OST again. (Edit after Chapter 5) There is improuvement at least... The main vilain has some good motivation and give a bit of moral debate, it's not much but at least it's something better than Tenna. The ninja gaiden like gameplay was well done, feel fair while asking for skill, give some moment of slight epicness, give a new way to explore... The overhaul style may feel disapointing. Japan ? Again ? Yes, I really like japan, I really like their culture too, but it could be more unique like the other chapter had, even Chapter 3 has an unique ambient with few clichés, chapter 5 feels like a cliché with few good ambient. Story wise, it's again very little, though this feels now that there is really something. Asgore have more background, and an interesting one, danger is more present, and the story lead a bit more somewhere. But again, it's been 8 years , we're 2 chapters (or only one ?) close to the end, and it feels like there is already too much stuff to end. I really hope that 6 will start to give real answers and put an end is some stories, unlike One Piece, we don't need more we need a closure, an end The snowgrave route being just 20-30ish minutes long, just to wait for some years again, it would be infuriating. I really, deeply wish there will be no more mysteries, because there is no need for more. Don't make Deltarune a mystery box game, make it a game with story that has mystery. OST wise, it's fine. Nothing stand out, may add one or two songs in my game OST playlist.Afficher plusAfficher moins

Deltarune is REALLY amazing on a lot of point as you would expect from Toby Fox's second big game. Don't let my negative evaluation tell you it's not a good game, it's an AMAZING game. But since Steam's evaluation system is crap, I felt like putting a negative one, which will be subsumed and drowned in the (deserved) plethoras of positive ratings anyway. At least like that, if you're specifically looking for negative reviews to understand what is BAD about the game, you've got a chance to understand what there is in this game that is bad. All the positive evalutation will cover you on what is AMAZING in the game anyway. PROS : Game lenght: This is one of the best Graphics : Pixellated like Undertale, but still quite better, more detailed with much more variations in styles, diversity, designs, ambiances, etc. Music : Incredible as you would expect from Scenario : Most elements of the scenario are good to very good. The characters are generally likable like in Undertale. Some things are a bit shabby, like some characters not being very much developed despite them being recurrent and ending up not much more than comic reliefs, which didn't really happen in Undertale because all important characters with at least a substantial amount of "screen"time had something touching about them. Here, Toby tried to do the same, but I feel like it's not necessarily as good, and the main reason for that is the absence of a full evil path. The genius in Undertale is that characters which you may not like and may be barely more than annoying in Neutral or Pacifist, would turn up completely differently in Genocide. However here, since the "genocide" route is much more sporadic, it doesn't help as much (though it still does) Replayability : In Undertale, you would have to do the game three times to get all three main ends. And each one had the potential to be quite the different experience depending on how you proceeded for your neutral run. You had a pacifist run, a neutral run and a genocide run. Each with their own branchings, bosses, and general strategy that changed the way you played without the gameplay itself changing. In Deltarune it really feels like your action don't matter until you get to Snowgrave Route. And even then, there Snowgrave route is not always present like in Chapter 3 where it disappears completely... or Chapter 1 where its branching has not yet appeared... Scenario : Not enough Snowgrave... Imagine if Genocide in Undertale simply disappeared during a whole chapter...? WHAT THE ♥♥♥♥? Snowgrave is IN-CRE-DI-BLE. It is justified by several means that it does not appear in the first chapter (though it still sucks, but at least this serves several other aspects of the scenario) The problem is that after chapter 2, it disappear completely in chapter 3... Which is part of why chapter 3 is much more "meh" than chapter 2, so chapters already goes up and down in quality like this, which is not very good at all... Four gives a good bit of Snowgrave at its beginning, but then it disappears again. Gameplay : ♥♥♥♥ YOU, TOBY! OKAY?! In Undertale, Genocide was the only path with hard bosses, and there were only two of them. AND WAY MORE IMPORTANTLY: there was this incredible tie between the gameplay and the scenario where the former was totally justified by the latter. In Genocide, most bosses you didn't have to even fight because you were just way too strong being the ultimate violent being racking a lot of XP. But as Vision says in Avengers, a more powerful evil also brings out more powerful heroes and vice-versa, and thus Undyne and Sans block your way by being incredibly powerful, and it's justified! And you're not frustrated when it happens even if you fail, because thanks to the incredible several-layered meta scenario: it makes sense! And they are only two! In Deltarune, every chapter has at least one secret boss who is INSANELY DIFFICULT! And sometimes there is MORE THAN ONE!!! WHAT THE ♥♥♥♥ TOBY?!!? This is another game that I will simply to have to cheat to see in its entirety, like ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ Silksong (it's far from being as worse as Silksong since in Deltarune it is at least optional). Even if you manage to beat one or even several of the secret bosses, you just KNOW you'll have to suffer against the next, and the next one, and the next one... Also Snowgrave IS blocked by a superpowerful boss, so ♥♥♥♥ you for that too. Ah... So now with our friend Flowery we also have difficult REGULAR boss... Superb... Chapter 5's Weird Route starts very interesting with an incredible scene with Noelle. Then it stops, and it's finished... And it's says that Weird Route will continue on chapter 7... I can't really judge this since it will make more sense with the whole game I suppose. But the scene was really great at least. Note that in order to pursue said route you need to make extremely fast dialogue choice at the end. I was pretty miff because I failed it first time as I did not know what to do and if there are no save in the whole chapter 5 weird route so you have to restart the entire chapter which is very annoying. But I managed to do it on my second try, it's actually totally feasible as long as you know what you're supposed to do. Finally, to top it off in being annoying, the "third route" of the game doesn't exist anymore... I know that the game is based on "you as the player you cannot decide" at the opposite of Undertale, but there was always at least a little wiggle room. Personally, I was actually doing 3 routes for each chapter: the purely pacisifist, Weird/Snowgrave, and another third one a "violence" route where I wan't doint Snowgrave but still fighting only by hitting and defeating enemies. The latter didn't change things drastically on some points like the Weird Route does, but it does change some things and has a different gameplay, sufficiently to be somewhat interesting (for example Tenna dies for real if you fight him violently and is not repaired, Queen comments on nobody having followed you). This "violent" route was already very limited and had only a few changes due to how the scenario of the chapters work and the fact you need the help of some NPCs to progress, like you need the help of Monster Kid in Genocide in Undertale anyway so you don't kill them. All of this made it already not so interesting, but at least the game still took that in consideration. In Chapter 5, this route has become incredibly pointless... To the point Susie and Ralsei does not listen to your command anymore, and refuse to attack the final boss, and actually even healing him (consuming YOUR TP). Toby Fox thought himself clever by giving us the illusion of choice and then at some chosen points telling us "ahaha, you don't have that much choice". But now, there is no illusion anymore, just Toby brandishing a big "**** you" if you play any route the two only routes.Afficher plusAfficher moins
