A believable tropical archipelago fuses stealth, assault and hunting with a dark descent, drafting the blueprint for a decade of Ubisoft open worlds

Notre verdict

A benchmark that won its reputation the hard way

Rewind to 2012 and Far Cry 3 was Ubisoft's marquee release of the year — and, oddly, an underdog. Pre-orders were soft and nobody outside the studio was betting on it. Then it shipped, and word of mouth flipped the story overnight. Metacritic landed the console builds around 90 and the PC version at 88, Steam still holds an 88 percent positive rating across more than a hundred thousand reviews, and cumulative sales crossed ten million by 2014.

A panorama of the islands

The long tail is just as striking. Years on, the Strong rating its remaster pulled on OpenCritic and the steady drip of "still a masterpiece after all this time" write-ups in player communities point the same way: this is an open world that has aged well, which is no small thing in a genre that dates quickly. It also dragged Far Cry from a relatively niche series up into one of Ubisoft's flagship names, took home a BAFTA for action game, and showed up on plenty of Game of the Year shortlists — credentials that together cement where it stands in its generation, and explain why it still gets named in best-of-the-decade conversations.

Who it is for, and whether the sequels caught up

So, today, who is this for? If you want a believable, dangerous, beautiful tropical archipelago to sneak through, storm and hunt across, and you are happy to be pulled along by a mature, shadowed coming-of-age story, Far Cry 3 was practically built for you. The balance it strikes between open-world freedom and narrative texture is one few games have fully replicated since. Turn it around: if you favour tight linear storytelling, feel nothing for the clear-the-outposts loop, or you are here mainly for competitive multiplayer, the island will not hold you — its soul is in that single-player run.

Jason overlooking the islands

As for which version to play, the answer mirrors the visuals verdict: the original PC build at full settings is the definitive way in, with the console originals close behind for what the hardware of the day allowed, and the 2018 Classic Edition serving only as a backstop for newer consoles. There is no season pass maze to untangle and no essential paid content gating the main story — the base game is the whole experience, and Blood Dragon is a delicious optional dessert rather than a missing course.

Which leaves the last question: more than a decade on, will the sequels replace it? The opposite, if anything. As the series' defining entry and the architect of its formula, the third game set the template — exotic open world, magnetic villain, liberate-and-light-the-map, hunt-to-upgrade — that Far Cry 4, 5 and 6 all ran with, and that Ubisoft's own Assassin's Creed and Watch Dogs borrowed wholesale. Yet the sequels keep escalating scale and systems only to be hauled back and measured against the third game, and the verdict is usually that they never topped it. Its most direct rival, Far Cry 4, reused the same formula without buying back the freshness; neither its villain nor its setting outshone Vaas and the Rook Islands. In the end the whole progression loop is stitched onto Jason's descent into violence, and Vaas turned madness into the series' signature — and those two things are exactly what no one has managed to copy. Which is why, when a veteran points a newcomer at a place to start, the answer is almost always the same: begin with the third one.
