“Ever wanted to run a Jurassic park and watch a T. rex tear a fence apart in a storm? It makes that fantasy real — the dinosaurs and the mood are everything. The management layer is thin, though, so come for the dinosaurs, not for crunching park economics.”

Notre verdict

Critics cold, players paying: that contrast is its truest portrait

Settle the accounts. Metacritic 69, OpenCritic 71, IGN a flat 4.8 — from the professional vantage, Jurassic World Evolution is a middling-to-lower work. Flip to the players' side and the picture inverts. Of nearly fifty thousand Steam reviews, 87% are positive; the game sold a million copies in five weeks and went on to multiple millions, Frontier Developments' most successful launch yet, the one that carried the studio into the ranks of the big publishers.

Jurassic World Evolution thriving park

This contrast is not a contradiction; it is a precise explanation of what the game is. Critics measured it against the yardstick of a management sim and read off shallowness and repetition. Players measured it against the question of whether they could run a Jurassic park with their own hands and watch dinosaurs come alive, and read off satisfaction. The same game, different rulers, opposite verdicts. In 2018 it proved one thing: a good enough dinosaur and a genuine enough film fantasy can pull on a market far harder than a tidy review score. It is a useful reminder that aggregate numbers flatten a game into a single digit and lose the most important question of all — what, specifically, were you hoping to feel when you pressed start. For the right buyer the 4.8 is noise; for the wrong one the 87% is a trap.

Guests and dinosaurs

In the end you have to actually love dinosaurs — not turn up to crunch the numbers

Who should buy it? The answer is plain. If you are a fan of the Jurassic films, or simply want to pick up easily and run a park of living dinosaurs with your own hands, soaking in the immersion of watching them move — and sometimes break loose — through a park you built, this game hands you joy worth far more than its price. It is approachable, its visual payoff is high, its cinematic mood runs full. It suits the player who just wants to live out a Jurassic dream. It is the rare tycoon game you can hand to someone who has never touched the genre — they will be charmed by the dinosaurs long before they notice the systems underneath are thin, and for a great many buyers, that charm is the entire point and more than enough.

Tyrannosaurus through the fence

Who should steer clear? If what you are after is Planet Zoo's deep economy, fine-grained welfare management and long-haul challenge that holds for hundreds of hours, this will disappoint you — the management layer really is thin, and once the five islands are cleared it is easy to set down. At bottom it is a dinosaur simulator and a film dream machine, not a hardcore strategy game, and almost every negative review traces back to picking up the wrong yardstick of expectation. One last gut check for the undecided: picture a Tyrannosaurus breaking free in a thunderstorm and charging the tour road you just built, you scrambling to send a helicopter to dart it while some part of you is, honestly, thrilled. If that picture lights you up, no review score matters — the game will hand you the joy it promised. If your mind instead drifts to whether that economic system's marginal returns curve is sound, you will likely feel bored before the second island. It bet everything on the dinosaurs and the dream — won the market, lost a slice of the critics — and which side you land on comes down to nothing but why you wanted to play it in the first place. Answer that one question honestly before you ever click buy, and the aggregate score printed on the box becomes almost entirely irrelevant to you.
