Did the limited-edition *007: The Living Daylights* controller flop? Not even gold could save its blandness.
What first caught my eye, actually, wasn’t the controller itself, but the phrase “inspired by the gun barrel.” Bond’s most iconic visual memory is clearly that razor-sharp symbol you can recognize in a second. Yet when it comes to this 007 First Light PS5 limited-edition controller, it turns into a few faint, low-presence lines—like something that was supposed to land a heavy blow but ended up as nothing more than a light glancing hit.

Sony has already officially announced that this 007 First Light-themed limited-edition PS5 controller will launch alongside the game on May 27, priced at 12,480 yen, which is about 537 RMB in this article. That’s roughly $10 or £10 more than a standard DualSense, and honestly, that premium isn’t outrageous. The issue is that limited editions have never been sold on functionality alone, but on that impulse of “I want to collect this the moment I see it.”
This time, the design is very simple: gold as the main color, accented with black details, with the game’s LOGO placed on the central touchpad. The official explanation is fairly complete as well, saying the gold reflects the elegance and classic aura of the Bond series, while the surface lines pay tribute to the iconic gun barrel opening shot. As a concept, that’s not bad at all—it even feels a bit like the high-concept setups in many indie games, where the poster copy alone makes you think, “That’s clever.” Unfortunately, once realized, the visual layering feels too thin, failing to fuse the danger, luxury, and spy identity this IP should embody into one strong, memorable impression.

GamesRadar was particularly blunt in its assessment, even saying it “has almost killed all of its excitement for future PS5 limited-edition controllers.” That may be a bit harsh, but it shows the disappointment is very real. Both media and players generally feel the problem isn’t that it looks ugly, but that it plays things too safe—so safe that it feels like little more than a standard gold skin slapped on, lacking the distinctiveness a limited-edition piece of hardware needs most. It’s a bit like expecting Celeste-level mechanical ingenuity and ending up with a game jam prototype that only changed the color palette.

What’s interesting is that even the back doesn’t do much more with the idea, featuring only the game’s LOGO and tagline. For a classic IP like 007, which thrives on symbolism, that’s almost the biggest shame of all. Whether it’s a silenced pistol, a tie, a wristwatch, casino chips, or the gun barrel shot and opening silhouettes, there was plenty of room for a smarter visual language. As it stands, this version feels more like “mission accomplished” than “a true collector’s item.”
If you’re a die-hard 007 fan, or you were already planning to pick up a full set of themed merchandise when the game launches, this controller still has its reasons to buy—at the very least, the release timing is clear, and its official limited-edition status is right there. But if you care more about the quality of the design itself, I’d suggest waiting and seeing. After all, when you spend 537 RMB on a limited-edition controller, what you’re really buying is emotional value—and that’s exactly where this one has drawn the most criticism, because it simply doesn’t deliver enough of it.

Looking at the broader trend, players are becoming increasingly demanding when it comes to limited-edition peripherals. People don’t just want a “recolor” anymore—they want something that, like a great indie game, can create a strong lasting impression with only a few elements. 007 is a theme that was naturally suited to being bolder, smarter, and more dramatic. But right now, this controller feels like it’s standing steadily just above the passing line. The creativity isn’t absent, but the execution really is missing that final spark.
