A recent post on the Reddit community for Black Myth: Wukong sparked discussion after one player said they bought a physical copy through a used Facebook listing, then found the game had no language menu and only offered Chinese voice acting and Chinese subtitles. The player had expected the disc to work like the international version, where language options can be changed, but after following an online guide to skip the opening, return to the main menu, and check the settings, no such option appeared.

Region-mismatched physical copies are not new. The issue here is not the quality of Black Myth: Wukong itself, but how clearly version information is communicated in second-hand sales. On the facts presented, this looks less like a game malfunction than a language-support check that never happened before money changed hands.

Several players pointed out that the copy was likely the mainland China retail version, and that the back of the box clearly states it includes Chinese audio only and Chinese subtitles only. In other words, the information was on the product. The problem is that the seller reportedly did not show the back of the case, while the buyer also did not ask about language support before purchasing.

Both sides appear to have made assumptions about something that should be checked as plainly as price, disc condition, or platform compatibility. The buyer later added that they do not live in a Chinese-speaking region and were not familiar with this version.

The language issue also matters more for Black Myth: Wukong than it might for a lighter action game. For overseas players, subtitles are not a bonus feature; they are what make the story, quests, and dialogue readable.

What they needed was at least English subtitles to follow the narrative and dialogue. That distinction matters: the original performances can carry the tone, but subtitles decide whether the game is actually playable for someone who cannot read the on-screen language.

Responses split along familiar lines. Some players shared similar stories about buying the wrong regional version in the past, which suggests the risk has long existed around imported or second-hand physical discs. Others said they deliberately prefer playing Black Myth: Wukong with Chinese voice acting and English subtitles, arguing that the Chinese performance has more character and feels closer to the intended experience.

The buying lesson is straightforward.
