*Death Stranding 2* Hits 55,000 on Steam — Has Kojima Won Again?

On March 20, after the PC version of Death Stranding 2: On the Beach launched, its real-time player count on Steam skyrocketed all the way to 55,444, smashing the series’ previous ceiling to pieces. For a game with a decidedly non-traditional pace and gameplay style that feels very much “Kojima-esque,” that number is seriously impressive.

Just looking at the comparison makes it obvious how huge this surge is. The original Death Stranding peaked at 32,515 players at launch in 2020, while last year’s Director’s Cut saw a returning-player peak of 22,080 when the sequel landed on PS5. Now DS2 has charged straight to around 55,000, nearly double the original. This isn’t just “a normal sequel gaining a bit more traction” — this is a genuine breakout.

More importantly, this result has already pushed Death Stranding 2 to sixth place on Steam’s concurrent-player ranking for PlayStation ports. It currently sits behind titles like Horizon Zero Dawn and Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered. If it can pull in around another 22,000 players over the weekend, it may even have a shot at surpassing Ghost of Tsushima and climbing even higher. This kind of chart-climbing speed feels a lot like winning the opening objective in an FPS and instantly taking control of the pace, setting the whole team up to play more smoothly from there.

There’s also a broader industry implication behind these numbers. Recently, rumors have been circulating that Sony may scale back its efforts to bring single-player games to PC, and that even some future heavyweight titles might not make their way to the platform. But the surge in attention around Death Stranding 2 is essentially a direct rebuttal from the market: it’s not that PC players won’t buy single-player games — they’re proving through the most straightforward metric possible, concurrent player counts, that high-quality content can still explode in popularity.

From a player’s perspective, if you enjoy high-production storytelling and single-player experiences that emphasize atmosphere and presentation, then DS2 has clearly fired the opening shot of being “worth watching.” If you care more about pure action feedback, though, you may want to first consider whether this particular Kojima flavor is something you can really get into. It’s not the kind of game that everyone instantly clicks with, but once it builds discussion momentum and community traction, its staying power can often be even more formidable than its launch.

My take is simple: these 55,000 players aren’t just a win for Death Stranding 2 — they’re also a powerful showcase for the high-quality single-player market on PC. If Sony is truly hesitating over whether to keep bringing its big titles to Steam, this set of numbers should at least make them recalibrate their aim.
