*Death Stranding 2* Free Update Is Live! Hardcore Difficulty Has Arrived on PS5
The “no turning back” high-difficulty option has always been a hard benchmark for testing the foundations of a game system—like throwing a military unit straight into a high-altitude extreme-cold training ground. If the underlying parameters aren’t solid, the flaws are exposed immediately. On March 20, to celebrate the official unlock of the PC version of Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, Kojima Productions pushed the free 1.013.000 update to players of the original PS5 version. This update is no small one, and its direction is very clear: tougher challenges, restored presentation, and some balance tuning along the way.

The standout addition in this update is undoubtedly the new “Going into the Wild” difficulty mode. The developers have made it clear that once you enter this mode, there is “no turning back.” Sam will have to face deadlier enemies and harsher natural environments. For a game like Death Stranding, where terrain, load management, and route planning form the core gameplay loop, increasing the difficulty is far more than simply raising enemy HP. In terms of authenticity, it feels more like shifting logistics transport from standard routes to dangerous supply lines in hostile territory, where the margin for error becomes razor-thin. In return, completing orders grants stronger achievement feedback as well as gratitude from NPC porters. This reward-and-punishment logic holds up well and reflects a thoughtfully grounded design approach.
Looking beyond the vehicle system, the update also strengthens training and presentation. Version 1.013 adds the VR training area “Captured in the Fantastical Zone,” where players can relive Sam’s showdown with Neil and unlock exclusive gear, including a new bandana. This is especially useful for players who enjoy repeatedly refining their combat flow—it effectively adds a controllable tactical firing range. At the same time, Hideo Kojima mentioned in an interview that this update restores cutscenes that had previously been removed due to storage limitations. That matters a great deal to story-focused players and lore enthusiasts alike, because the narrative impact of Death Stranding 2 is built on a heavy volume of cinematic presentation and information delivery. Remove even one segment, and it can feel like pages missing from a battle report—the chain of understanding breaks.

On the functionality side, the update also adds the Chiral Cat, which appears in the private room aboard the Magellan and can be used in Photo Mode. There are also brand-new “Nightmare” segments and a variety of new items. PS5 players can also claim an exclusive “PlayStation Connectivity Reward” on the same day. These additions may not alter the core framework, but they clearly add more layers to the experience. Photo Mode users and collectors in particular will probably flood the community with related screenshots very quickly.

From a tactical perspective, what I value more is the official note that “balance adjustments were fine-tuned based on feedback from players around the world.” That suggests the team is still closely watching how players actually progress through the game, rather than only focusing on launch-day performance. For a game that emphasizes the combined pressure of transport, stealth, combat, and the environment, careless balance changes can easily reduce the experience to a single dominant solution. As things stand, this update at least sends a positive signal: Kojima Productions is still seriously maintaining the integrity of the system rather than just making superficial changes.
If you’ve already cleared the original PS5 version, this update is worth returning for—especially if you’re a veteran player looking for more intense route-planning challenges. If you already like designs that are “painful but rewarding,” then “Going into the Wild” will very likely be the main course of this free update. On the other hand, players focused purely on story can still get substantial value from the restored cutscenes, VR training, and new segments. Overall, this is not a flashy but hollow update; it meaningfully strengthens the game in a more complete and more hardcore direction. At the very least, Death Stranding 2 hasn’t been bizarrely overhauled this time.
