Doom: The Dark Ages DLC rivals full sequel in scope, arrives 2026
id Software creative director Hugo Martin confirmed that the sole DLC for DOOM: The Dark Ages has entered its final development phase. The expansion is massive in scope—essentially a sequel in scale—and is slated for release in 2026.

This announcement brings back memories of DOOM Eternal's two-part DLC. Back then, id Software was still figuring out how to deliver meaningful paid content, and The Ancient Gods ended up completing the narrative while cranking combat intensity to sanity-testing levels. Now The Dark Ages promises a "sequel-sized" expansion, which sounds promising but also raises concerns about whether we're in for another "exhilarating yet punishing" experience.

The DLC introduces a spear weapon with quick-swap and throwing mechanics—a smart addition given that The Dark Ages' shield system already elevated melee combat. Adding a mid-range option should create more tactical depth. The return of the Slayer Gates alongside a new Master Arena caters to hardcore players, likely demanding dozens of hours to master. There's also a secret weapon tied to the lore that requires unlocking, continuing id Software's tradition of hiding Easter eggs—reminiscent of hunting down the BFG 9000 back in the day.

The most significant change is the heavily expanded exploration, incorporating light Metroidvania elements. The DOOM series has traditionally favored linear levels with occasional side paths, but now we're getting a hub area—likely Craid Mayker's ship—with 30% of content locked until after completing the DLC's main story. The return of the Archvile, Khan Maykr voiced again by Nika Futterman, and Darin De Paul's involvement signals a comprehensive narrative tackling the Sentinel civil war, the Wretched, and the armor lore threads. The DLC will finally explore Valen's dagger, the origins of the Soul Forge and Argent energy, with the Council of Six likely serving as the ultimate antagonist.

The 2026 release date—over a year after the base game—suggests id Software is taking development seriously rather than slicing off existing content for a quick cash grab. The concern is whether they'll repeat Eternal's mistake of setting difficulty curves so steep they alienate players. If they can maintain the hardcore edge while giving average players some breathing room, this DLC will be worth the wait.
