Kiki’s Delivery Service Live-Action Series in the Works at BBC as 10-Episode Adaptation
BBC Studios’ Children’s and Family division is developing a live-action Kiki’s Delivery Service series with Wheel in Motion and Kadokawa Group. The project is planned as 10 episodes of about 30 minutes each, marking the IP’s first live-action adaptation.

It is an obvious fit for television. Kiki, who is 13, leaves home for the port town of Koriko, runs a small delivery business, and starts building a new life through work and the friends she makes along the way. That gives the series room to be small-scale, patient, and character-driven.
Irena Brignull is writing, and her credits include The Boxtrolls, Skellig, and The Little Prince. Her résumé points to a version more interested in feeling and atmosphere than gimmickry. Set against Hayao Miyazaki’s 1989 Studio Ghibli film, the real challenge is not recreating familiar images, but finding a rhythm that suits the first volume of Eiko Kadono’s six-book series.
The timing matters: the original novel has sold millions of copies worldwide since its 1985 publication in Japan, and this adaptation lands on the book’s 40th anniversary. BBC Studios, Wheel in Motion, Kadokawa, Kadono, and Brignull have all expressed enthusiasm for the project.
Anyone expecting a live-action Ghibli replica should keep expectations in check. Live-action adaptations often lose the original’s light touch when they over-explain the world. But if this version stays gentle, focused, and grounded in growth, it has a real chance of working.
