Is *Uncharted 5* coming? Naughty Dog's three-pronged development can no longer be hidden.
Naughty Dog’s pace in the PS5 generation has actually been a bit unusual. Setting aside remasters, remakes, and collections, it hasn’t revealed many truly new projects, and the only one officially confirmed is Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, unveiled at TGA 2024. But recently, as information from multiple sources has been pieced together, the outline of Naughty Dog’s upcoming lineup has begun to come into focus, slowly but surely, like the second half of an endurance race: the studio may not have been idle at all, but instead could be pushing forward three projects at the same time.

The clearest one at the moment is still Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet. According to the compiled leaks, the game is expected to launch in 2027, and there’s a strong chance we’ll see more news about it before the end of this year. For players, it feels like Naughty Dog taking a high-speed turn out of its comfort zone. After all, compared with established IPs like Uncharted and The Last of Us, a brand-new sci-fi setting is a much stronger test of the studio’s engine, art direction, and narrative limits.
What has the community even more excited is that the second rumored project may very well be Uncharted 5, with Nathan Drake potentially returning. Leaks claim the project has been in the works for more than four years, with a possible target window of 2028. The reason this rumor has gained traction is not just because “Drake’s return” is such an attention-grabber, but also because Uncharted itself is perfectly suited to serve as a big-budget showcase for the PS5 era: fast-paced, highly cinematic, and instantly recognizable commercially. It is, by nature, a platform-level flagship contender.

As for the third project, the name mentioned most often is The Last of Us Part III, though at this stage it remains only an early-development rumor. That means even if the project does really exist, it will likely still be quite a long time before any official reveal. Looking at it alongside Uncharted 5, you can actually read a very practical strategy from Naughty Dog: betting on a new IP to push for a higher future ceiling, while using established IPs to maintain brand heat and hold onto its core player base. This kind of combination play is more stable than relying on a single breakthrough.
From an industry-wide perspective, this kind of setup also fits the current trend in AAA development. It’s becoming harder and harder for major studios to rely on just one game to carry an entire generation. As development cycles continue to grow longer, studios have to allocate resources like a racing team coordinating its cars, keeping different projects at different stages so that visibility, releases, and revenue streams do not all dry up at the same time. If Naughty Dog really is advancing on three fronts, it would actually suggest the studio is trying to evolve from a “masterpiece workshop” into a more mature long-term content producer.
Of course, the most important thing right now is still to keep expectations in check. As repeatedly emphasized in these reports, most of this information comes from insiders and has not been officially confirmed; the only relatively certain fact is that Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet has already been publicly announced. My take is that players waiting for Uncharted 5 or The Last of Us Part III should avoid letting expectations run too high for now. The only two signals really worth watching are new information on Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet this year, and whether Naughty Dog continues to flesh out its lineup at future official events. Once the next starting gun goes off, we’ll probably find out whether this Sony powerhouse studio has simply been building momentum, or is getting ready to take over the finish line once again.
