Santa Monica Studio confirmed during its God of War panel at SDCC that a new mainline God of War starring Kratos has entered development. Studio creative lead Cory Barlog confirmed the project himself, saying it will directly continue the story of God of War: Laufey, which was also announced for PS5 with a release date of February 16, 2027.
The news is not just that Kratos is coming back. It is that Santa Monica is treating God of War: Laufey as the next key step in the series, not as a throwaway detour.

That makes God of War: Laufey look less like a stopgap and more like the marker for where the franchise goes next. For the first time, the series will hand the lead role to Laufey, also known as Faye, Kratos' wife and Atreus' mother. The story begins after her death, when she awakens in the gods' afterlife realm known as the Realm of All Time.
That setup is more interesting than a simple prequel. The premise puts the plans Laufey made in life to protect her husband and son under pressure, as those safeguards begin to fail. It is less about filling in backstory for its own sake, and more about testing whether the choices she made can still hold after death.
Barlog said at the event that the material in Laufey both continues what came before and lays groundwork for what comes next. From a player's perspective, that suggests Santa Monica is not treating God of War: Laufey as a sealed-off spin-off. It sounds like connective tissue for the next Kratos-led mainline game.

That connection could matter because Laufey's journey takes her through realms where gods from different mythological systems converge. For a series that has already moved beyond its Greek roots into Norse territory, that setup gives God of War room to expand without reducing the world to a checklist of mythological names.
The risk is that scale can turn thin fast. A map filled with grand labels can still feel empty if there is nothing meaningful behind the next corner. But if each realm has its own rules, enemies, secrets, and narrative fragments, the Realm of All Time could become a genuinely fresh space for the series. Laufey's agile, lethal combat style also points to a different rhythm from Kratos' heavier presence, which may help the game feel like more than a perspective swap.
The wait is still the catch. God of War: Laufey will not arrive on PS5 until February 16, 2027, and the new Kratos-led mainline game currently has no release date. Other details remain under wraps. The original report also notes that Santa Monica Studio is now focused on the final polish for God of War: Laufey, so Kratos' full return is likely still several years away.

For players, the takeaway is simple. If you only care about Kratos himself, there is no harm in waiting until Santa Monica reveals more about the next mainline entry. If you care about how the world beyond the Nine Realms expands, God of War: Laufey now looks close to essential.
For open-world and sandbox players, God of War has never been a traditional big-map series. Its strength is making a directed route feel hand-built rather than boxed in. You think the story is straight ahead, then a cave, puzzle, or piece of family history appears just off to the side. With a new Kratos game now officially in development, the hope is simple: let the road continue, but leave players a few unhurried paths worth wandering.
