IGN Calls Out "The Most Absurd Official Naming in History": Pokémon Scarlet/Violet Reveals Two Pikachu Wearing Vacation Outfits

There's a kind of unease that doesn't come from darkness, but from something you never anticipated suddenly appearing right in front of you.

Pokémon Winds/Waves has been officially revealed, slated for a 2027 release. The debut trailer showcased a new region, three new starter Pokémon, and new trainer characters — all within expectations. But what actually stopped me cold were two Pikachu dressed in vacation outfits.

One male Pikachu (identified by tail shape) is wearing a floral short-sleeve shirt, sunglasses, and a large white straw hat adorned with flowers. The other, a female Pikachu, wears a blue-and-pink floral dress with a blue baseball cap, also embroidered with a flower, and has pink cheeks instead of the traditional red. Their outfits look... like they're ready for a senior citizens' tour group heading to a beach resort.

What's even more unsettling is that Nintendo gave these two Pikachu official names: Windy and Wavy.

IGN outright called it "the most absurd official naming they've ever heard."

Snapping back to reality — this is an official Nintendo reveal, not some fan-made creation.

But what truly caught me off guard wasn't even that. So far, Nintendo has revealed almost no backstory whatsoever. The hats worn by these two Pikachu correspond to those of the two version-exclusive protagonist trainers, clearly tying each to a different version. IGN speculates they're significant NPCs in the game — whether version-exclusive characters, obtainable Pokémon, or a professor's partners remains to be seen. Every answer is locked away in 2027, and nothing will be revealed early.

The game is set in a brand-new region filled with beautiful islands and vast seas, where players journey alongside various Pokémon to overcome challenges together.

For now, though, the names "Windy" and "Wavy" are already humming through the community like a low-frequency noise that won't go away.
