September's PS+ freebies look thin, led by Sniper Elite and two others

Leaker billbil-kun has revealed part of the September 2026 PlayStation Plus Essential lineup early, and a Gamersky report on August 25 says the three games are Sniper Elite: Resistance, Chained Echoes, and Wobbly Life. That is the entire pitch, really: no disaster, no surprise hit, just a serviceable month with one marquee name, one game I would actually want to add to my library, and one obvious filler pick.

I would give it a 6/10. The lineup is fine, but it lacks a real hook. Sniper Elite: Resistance is the only one with AAA baggage. The slow-motion X-ray kills still land, and the rifle-shot spectacle still has plenty of impact. The problem is that this series has been doing the same trick since Sniper Elite V2. In 2026, living off headshots feels more like inertia than ambition.

Chained Echoes is the one game here I would actually click to add to my library. It has the pixel-art mood of Chrono Trigger, plus the machine obsession you associate with Xenogears. But indie JRPGs have rarely been the stars of PlayStation Plus Essential. How many players will really download it and finish it is a fair question.

The game "Warm Life" features a cheerful yellow character in a vibrant, cartoonish world with diverse landscapes and playful elements, suggesting a lighthearted and imaginative experience.

Wobbly Life is classic padding. It is the kind of soft, physics-driven comedy game that works best for stream clips and family sessions. For veteran players, it still does not quite reach the absurd joy of Katamari Damacy. Once the lineup goes live, people will probably still say this month is being filled out by indie leftovers. But Essential is supposed to have a little bargain-bin noise in it. It cannot be three big-budget releases every month.

Look across the last few months and Sony is clearly keeping Essential costs under control. None of the three games is a launch-day tentpole. None of them makes you say, "this month pays for itself." For anyone still subscribing, my advice is practical: unless you specifically want Chained Echoes, treat the fee as a subscription top-up, not a bargain. Back in the PS3 era, PlayStation Plus Essential could give you Call of Duty and Metal Gear Solid. This version of Essential is long past that point.
