Sony PS Adds 30-Day Online Check-In for Purchased Games

Sony has rolled out a new DRM system in the latest PS4 and PS5 firmware that requires digital games to verify their licenses online every 30 days, or they become unplayable. Modded Hardware broke the story on April 24, followed by Lance McDonald's coverage on X, sparking widespread player concern.

Requiring periodic online check-ins for purchased games is genuinely baffling. You finally get a free weekend to play, only to find your game locked because you haven't connected in a month—worse than working overtime. Destruction Games pulled the CMOS battery to test this, confirming the DRM is real. Spawn Wave hit authorization errors testing Saint Slayer: Spear of Sacrilege and Vampire Crawlers, with screens displaying "Cannot connect to server to verify license."

Sony's customer service contradictions make it worse. The AI support admitted the 30-day timer exists, while human reps denied it entirely, claiming digital games purchased in late March still work fine past 30 days offline. This internal confusion leaves players with no clear answers. DoesItPlay speculates it's targeting refund fraud or the Star Wars Racer Revenge exploit, but Sony has issued zero official statements.

For working professionals, this hits hardest from a value perspective. Busy schedules mean a month can easily pass without touching the console, then weekend gaming plans get derailed by a license lock requiring online verification first. Unstable home internet or business trips turn that 30-day limit into a ticking time bomb. Physical discs cost more upfront but sidestep these headaches entirely.

Sony's move genuinely undermines confidence in digital purchases. Buying a game outright should mean owning it, not periodic license renewals that feel more like renting. If you're eyeing PS digital games soon, either guarantee regular online access or seriously consider physical copies—at least those won't suddenly lock you out.
