“GTA6” isn’t here yet, but March’s Steam GPU chart is already in chaos
After the latest March Steam Hardware Survey came out, my eyes went straight to the GPU chart: the GeForce RTX 3060 has returned to the “most popular” spot, with the RTX 4060 right behind it. These two cards have basically cemented themselves as the “base” for mainstream 1080p and even 2K setups for the next few years. For players preparing to welcome open-world blockbusters like GTA 6, this reshuffle is actually more interesting than the surface numbers suggest.

Back in February, the Steam chart briefly looked downright surreal: multiple RTX 40 and 50 series cards suddenly surged up the rankings, and the RTX 5070 even briefly took the crown as the “most popular GPU.” That particular survey looked more like a statistical anomaly or a snapshot of a concentrated PC-building boom. Now that the March data has normalized, what we see is a layout closer to the real ecosystem: the 3060 reclaiming first place shows that, with both clearance pricing and second-hand prices on its side, this classic “sweet-spot” card is still the optimal choice for working-class gamers.
Looking at the trend, the RTX 5070 is still the fastest-rising model of this generation. It has already climbed to fifth overall, and among its peers it has surpassed the RTX 3070 and RTX 4070, and even overtaken the more “mainstream-positioned” RTX 5060. This phenomenon is crucial for fans of sandbox and simulation games: these titles often place sustained load on the CPU and VRAM, so a more balanced mid-high-end option like the 5070 actually suits long-term play in the Cities: Skylines series or the future GTA 6 online mode better than the “mainstream on paper” 5060.

Looking at vendor market share, Nvidia’s share among Steam users has dropped to 72.8%, a new low for the past year or so, while AMD has climbed back to 18.5%, basically returning to its state in early 2026. This reflects not only real-world factors like price and supply, but also a subtle shift in player mentality: more and more people are deciding which camp to join based on “Can it stably run the sandbox games I play most?” and “What’s my overall system budget?” rather than being led by ray tracing demo reels. For players focused on management sims, building, and survival games with long play cycles, being able to run a bunch of mods stably and keep a server running for hundreds of hours matters far more than a few extra frames of ray-traced reflections.
It’s also worth separately mentioning AMD’s first RDNA 4 GPU, the Radeon RX 9070, which appears on the survey list for the first time with a 0.16% share—still a very early starting stage. From a sandbox player’s perspective, if you’re into GTA-style open worlds with mods, or you like leaving simulation games running for long stretches, there’s no need to rush to rebuild your system around this card right now. What’s really worth watching over the next few months is how fast its share grows and how well the drivers are optimized for major AAA titles and popular Workshop-heavy games.
To close, here are a few simple buying pointers: if your budget is limited but you want to be well-prepared for GTA 6, keep tracking prices for cards in the 3060 tier—pairing a top-tier brand with decent cooling is enough to sustain high settings at 1080p. If you want solid 2K sandbox performance for the next few years and occasionally want to try heavy ray tracing, consider the 4060 or the already red-hot 5070—just choose based on which one has the better promotion. If you have a hard requirement for running multiple servers, video recording, or complex building mods, then prioritize models with more VRAM, a stronger bus, and better encoding capabilities, rather than just staring at FPS leaderboards. The underlying message of this shift in the Steam Hardware Survey is that what really shapes your experience of roaming, driving, and wreaking havoc in GTA 6 isn’t how new the GPU’s name is, but whether its actual installed base and price curve among players are reasonable.
