The Witcher 4 Arrives in 2028, but How Much Pressure Is Ciri Under?
CDPR confirmed in an official video last night that The Witcher 4 is planned for 2028 on PC, PS5, and XSX, and it also showed a new piece of Ciri key art. That is the real news here. For a game still in active development, the year matters more than the usual teaser-language, because players no longer have to live off rumors and speculation.
I would give the announcement a 7/10. That score is not about the game itself reaching that level. It is for CDPR finally putting a release year on the calendar. Michał Nowakowski said the company’s vision for the Witcher series and The Witcher 4 includes a huge, immersive open world, action-heavy gameplay, and a breathtaking story. He also called it CDPR’s biggest, boldest, and most ambitious game to date. Those are familiar promises, though. Every major publisher repeats some version of that pitch, and hearing it enough times puts you in mind of old PS1-era box art stuffed with grand claims. What will matter is the feel of the controls, the mission design, and whether the world is worth returning to. None of that has been shown clearly enough yet.

The biggest change is that Ciri is now firmly in the spotlight. The new art of the white-haired warrior gives players a much clearer image than a phrase like "the future of the series," but a single illustration still says little about the scale of the story. CDPR CEO Michał Nowakowski says this is the company’s largest, boldest, and most ambitious project so far, which only raises the bar further. Now the team has to turn that ambition into a stable game, not just a strong presentation.

Earlier, senior cinematic designer Felix Pedulla described The Witcher 4 as "incredible" and said players "are not ready" for it. Internal hype can be effective, but long-time players know the risk: the earlier a project pushes expectations to the top, the more likely it is to face backlash when the details are thin. CDPR has already proved it can build large-scale adventures, so it should spend less time on slogans and more time showing actual gameplay.
There is no reason to line up a purchase plan for 2028 yet. PC, PS5, and XSX players can wait for more gameplay before deciding whether this is a day-one buy. Keep the anticipation. Leave the pre-order on hold. The real Witcher 4 still has not stepped out from behind that art image.
