18 Years Later, Tianxia II Classic brings back its six-city turf war
Tianxia II Classic Edition rolled out its first major expansion, "Troops at the City Walls," on June 17, according to official materials. Built around the 2006 version's six major capital cities, the update introduces Six-City Siege, plus a new main story, expansion supplies, sign-in rewards, and 18th anniversary events. For an IP now in its 18th year, the key question is whether the old 3D MMO identity still holds up, and this expansion makes a credible case that it does.
Eighteen years ago, Tianxia II stood out as a relatively rare Chinese-made 3D DMMO, remembered for its Chinese ink-wash aesthetic, strong art direction, and a fully realized world. For more casual MMO players, that still matters more than any one system. Before you worry about stats or progression, you want to know whether the old Great Wilderness atmosphere is still visible at a glance.

The name "Troops at the City Walls" is a direct callback to the first expansion released for Tianxia II 18 years ago, which originally brought in city warfare and a battlefield system. This time, though, Tianxia II Classic Edition isn't just lifting the old version wholesale. Instead, it turns the 2006 edition's six main cities - Jiuli City, Shuzhou City, Liuguang City, Yunxuan City, Bei'a City, and Mengyuan City - into the battlegrounds for Six-City Siege.
That means six fronts opening at once, not a static queued mode. It puts more pressure on team command, force allocation, and offense-and-defense planning, because players are effectively dealing with multiple battle lines in parallel. It's more demanding than a straight nostalgia run, and that is part of why it feels more contemporary.

One smart move came before launch. Ahead of the new version's release, the official team put out a cloud gaming feature that lets players tour all six cities in a web browser and learn the terrain in advance. That's especially friendly to more casual players. You can get your bearings before entering a large-scale siege, and it also suggests the team understands that many players now engage with MMOs in short bursts of spare time rather than sitting at a PC every day.
Outside the siege mode, the update also adds a new main story, "The Fall of Liuguang", plus Old Relics Recovered, expansion supplies, sign-in rewards, and event rewards. Clearing the new main story grants Lei Diamonds, Golden Refining Stones, and a novelty mount. The expansion supply track also includes cosmetics, mounts, and even mobile auto weekly tasks, which is the kind of convenience that matters more than adding yet another layer of friction for players with limited time.

What makes the update feel more substantial is the longer-term roadmap behind it. The Classic Edition team says future plans include fleshing out the Great Wilderness world, rebuilding faction and warfare gameplay, expanding long-term PVE/PVP content, and building a long-term honor progression system. The developers are also preparing the first Tianxia II Classic Edition Hall of Fame, with evaluation categories covering not just gear score and cultivation, but also appearance, Tianxia League, arena, prestige value, faction internal affairs, sect star, couples' unity, treasure digging, and fishing.
That is an encouraging direction. It does not reserve all recognition only for the most hardcore or most combat-focused players; it leaves room for ordinary players too.

The team says more competitive formats are also planned for this year, including a major alliance push-themed mode and mass-participation themed tournaments. On the PVE side, July will bring new instances including Outer Demon-Locking Tower and Ghost Prison of the Hidden Valley, which will drop their own separate collectible Primordial Soul Orbs. That matters if large-scale PvP is not your thing, because the update is at least trying to avoid making city warfare the only reason to log in.
Then there's the anniversary campaign. In the past, Tianxia II enlisted Yang Mi and Han Geng as ambassadors. For the 18th anniversary, Tianxia II Classic Edition has announced Joey Wong as its new spokesperson. During the anniversary period, the game is also running a Great Wilderness Draw Day event. Players who bind a character can receive 1 million gold ingots and an anniversary gift pack, with a chance to win physical prizes including a Zhang Xue motorcycle.
