Two Decades In, Mecha BREAK Director Guo Weiwei Departs; Lei Jun Responds

Mecha BREAK producer Guo Weiwei posted on social media that he is leaving Xishanju tomorrow, closing out a 20-year run at the Kingsoft studio he joined after graduating in 2004. Xiaomi founder Lei Jun shared the post and replied, thanking Guo for "22 years" of dedication.

The studio's two longest-running bets have been its flagship wuxia MMO and the mecha project that became Mecha BREAK. Guo sat at the center of both. Maintaining a mature live-service game while shepherding a new, mechanically demanding IP is a double load most publishers split across two leads; asking one person to carry both is a real strain.

The numbers don't quite line up. Guo described the "20 years" he spent on these projects as the most fulfilling stretch of his career, while Lei Jun thanked him for "22 years" of dedication. The gap likely reflects Kingsoft internships or pre-graduation project work before his formal 2004 hire at Xishanju, but until the studio clarifies the record it's a discrepancy worth noting, not a settled fact.

On the product side, Mecha BREAK is Xishanju's most technically demanding public project — mech design, handling, and combat pacing need long iteration. Guo led both development and live operations, so his exit leaves the project without its original design lead. Xishanju still hasn't named a successor or said who will take over, so the community is right to wonder who's steering next.

In his farewell, Guo credited the player community as the main force behind the game's growth; for a hardcore title, feedback matters more than any marketing push. Anyone still following Mecha BREAK shouldn't panic over the news; the sensible call is to wait for Xishanju to name a successor and lay out a version roadmap. A producer change is one chapter, not an ending. The real verdict will come from the next patches and the live build.
