The best space-sim sub-genre since Freelancer. Yes, it's THAT good. What type of game is it? Freelancer + ARPG (ex. Diablo 2 or Titan Quest style) + some light puzzles PROS: - breathtaking visuals - great soundtrack; from subtle sci-fi beats to almost melancholic synths - optimization (which is rarely good in this day and age) - QA done right, aka. no visible bugs - looting - inventory, crafting, upgrading - action - fast, but not chaos, with boosts/powers etc. as in ARPG spells alternatives - solid trading system - exploring secrets is rewarding + you'll get bonus creds and XP for clearing the location - story isn't in your face not to discourage exploration but is fairly interesting - devs were very brave not 100% listening to fans and bring Freelancer 2.0 but also taking some good advice into consideration - ship custimization - mining done right, not overwhelming or tedious - interesting, non typical for this type of games locations and story segments (won't spoil, you'll see at 2nd system) - PC friendly - plays amazing with KB+mouse, 1st person camera with and without cockpit, 3rd person, adjustable FOV, DLSS, lots of options... CONS: - random encounters aka. "unknown signal" could be more diverse - NOTE to DEVS - please add some variety and more mystery to it, thank you!Show moreShow less
Let me start this review off by saying - This game is absolutely f*cking fantastic. Quick List of Pros because this game absolutely deserves to be praised for several things. - Stunning. This game is gorgeous. Ton's of beautiful scenery that feels nice to navigate. - Impressive ship combat. One of my biggest problems with most Space-Sim style games is that the combat feels like garbage to play. Not sure what it is that makes it feel so much more engaging but I am loving it so far. - Progression systems that feel worthwhile. Without spoiling anything, alongside actually upgrading parts of your ship, you get to invest credits and resources gained while scavenging into companions who will provide passive benefits. Exploring some of the "unmapped" markers that pop up randomly will provide various rewards, one of which is a sort of "skill point" which you can use to permanently gain a bonus to one of your stats. - A very nice crafting system. The player can opt to dismantle ship parts rather than sell them, to gain crafting xp that can be spent towards unlocking the recipe of various ship parts. The player can gain different kinds of XP that go towards learning to craft higher rarity versions of ship parts. Not getting the gun type you prefer using? Craft one at your level, at a higher rarity than common and build yourself how you want, if you haven't been getting lucky with loot drops. All of that said - I can't offer a "Yes" recommendation because at the moment, I don't feel that the price of the Early Access is worth the price tag it's got. It took me rougly 7 hours to get to the end of the early-access main story, and with only two of the systems (as far as I can tell) implemented into the game, I feel that the game can't give most players enough hours of meaningful play to be worth the full $40 as of the current version of the game. WISHLIST THIS GAME and be sure to pick it up later on down the line!Show moreShow less
If you look, the negative reviews are all about delaying Russian localization, not the game itself. People reviewing for politics, not for actual game-play. It is a step up from the first one and a great game with a ton of updates so far. There is a demo, so not like you go in blind.Show moreShow less
I really like a lot of things about this game. The crafting seems interesting, the storyline is fine, but it has one glaring issue that I absolutely HATE when games do. They scale content to your level. I am in the first sector and everything just scales with me. The problem is that I have not been able to keep up on gear. I can't farm lower level missions to try and get more gathering materials for crafting because all areas have now scaled to my level. I know it is early access but they need to rethink this. At this point I will reach max level in the starter zone. What is the point of exploring if all the content just scales with me.Show moreShow less
Freelancer meets Diablo with a hint of classic Nintendo games. Yup, just like that.Show moreShow less
This is one of those games which I would ideally give a "Mixed" review for, but steam doesn't allow such option. And whilst the line is very thin, I ultimately have to lean towards something, and as it stands I cannot recommend this game in its current state. Long story short - this game is abandoned with serious flaws still present. A few months ago, devs have made an announcement on their official discord that they are moving on to other projects, and the community manager has stated several times that there will be no more big patches. This is whilst there is still a wide plethora of technical issues left unresolved with the game. I myself have reported several - I will name some of them below. What's most egregious in this however, is the attitude of the studio. When I made an open complaint about this situation on the official discord, the community manager chimed in, and part of their statement was - to paraphrase - "If you don't like this, you can look for games from a different studio", which I guess is an advice I shall listen to, whilst advising you, dear readers, to do the same. Here's a few examples of the issues which have been reported, and which the devs apparently consider fine to leave in the final product (which by the way is priced at nearly a full AAA title level): Item pickups no-clipping through asteroids and structures, making them impossible to retrieve (btw, this issue is practically as old as THE GAME ITSELF, and to my knowledge is present in the earliest public demos where item pickups are a thing). Items never despawn, so if you get one lodged in a wall within one of the non-random locations - enjoy your new permanent landmark on the radar. The "10% chance to reset device cooldowns" attribute having a chance to glitch your ship's ULT, putting it in a state where it cannot be activated until you reload a save or go to another area Some spatial bypass locations (especially in WOTA DLC) have enemies spawning close, resulting in player potentially getting spawnkilled during the unskippable "teleporting in" animation. Laser beams randomly becoming invisible Some WOTA encounters are missing dialogue lines Titans DLC activating a recurring, annoying voice notification for a repeatable endgame activity. These notifications can interrupt gameplay and CANNOT BE TURNED OFF. Weapon balance is out of control, especially regarding Legendary items. There's practically little to no reason to use legendary weapons during late game, as in a vast majority of cases they are objectively inferior to regular guns. Cloak mechanic has no consistency whatsoever. Sometimes you're detected whilst perfectly still, sometimes you're not, even when actively firing guns, and there seems to be no logic to it, nor any feedback to whether you're currently detectable or not. Horribly inconsistent rules regarding to what's vulnerable to what. For example, Ancient Beacons are for some strange reason untargettable by warfare devices... but at the same time vulnerable to debuffs that some of those devices apply. But not all of them. They are also targettable by lock-on missiles... auto-tracking missiles ignore them, and they do not trigger mines. There's no rhyme or reason to it. Harsh, arbitrary limit on homebase item storage. This game is part a looter RPG, where much of the appeal is a wide potential for synergies and combos within various item loadouts... and you can easily run out of space for said items. Seriously, in the endgame it's a common practice to dedicate whole ships to the sole purpose of being mules, perpetually sitting in a hangar just to store gear. Egregious ancient rift balance. To illustrate - rift boss mutators range from laughable ("boss can periodically move") all the way to "RNG has decided that you lose on the spot today" (such as the "boss is surrounded by indestructible shield, forcing you to fly inside and fight at point blank". I don't think I have to explain why having to fight A BOSS at POINT BLANK RANGE is quite possibly one of the deadliest positions you can find yourself in. And you can straight up ALT+F4 if you currently have a long range build). Endgame full of dead content. There's no consistent money sinks, and there is literally zero reason to do jobs - there's nothing useful they offer at that point, and do not offer any challenge anyway for the endgame gear. Also there's no modding support, so all of the above is permanent. Nobody will ever be able to do anything about these things, and it will stick with the game forever. Of course I will edit this review if these actually get fixed at some point, but I wouldn't hold my breath for it. And I could go on and on, but this should already give you a clear picture. The fact that someone from the dev team looked at this littany of bugs, issues, and oversights, and decided "yup, that seems like a finished game to me", and then the community manager comes along and basically says "if you don't like it, then go play something else" is utterly disgraceful. And I'm saying all of this whilst considering myself a FAN of these people's works. I've been an avid player of the devs' products all the way back in the J2ME times, with Deep 3D and Galaxy on Fire series being gems of my childhood gaming. To see my heroes abandoning a great game in such a horrendous state and asking THIS price for it is seriously heartbreaking. That is nothing short of lack of respect to one's own work. Because it is otherwise a genuinely good game, if you're willing to grit your teeth and sit through all of the annoying nonsense it has you deal with. At the moment, this is the closest we can get to a successor to Freelancer. The combat is satisfying, the story writing is superb, and the constant interactions between Adam and HIVE are some of my all time favorite comedy I've experienced in games. In general, this game is fun. But is it $50 fun, plus about $35 price in DLCs? Definitely not in this shoddy state.Show moreShow less
**Did not play beta or alpha or any version of the game prior to 01/18/2021** This is it. It's not fully baked but boy oh boy is it delicious. I grew up playing Wing Commander 3 in the late 90's and Freelancer in the early 2000's, birthing my love for space combat RPG's. I've been chasing the dragon ever since. I remember trying Everspace for the first time and it was not my cup of tea as a rogue-like. But it was so close to what I was searching for. Everspace 2 is it. It's in EA folks. You should set expectations as such, if you want to support the project. It's incredibly playable, feature rich, and gorgeous in its current state. It's fun to play, and wow did Rockfish games get a lot right. I cannot WAIT to see what is in store for the future of development. I've had one crash so far, and it was expected, as I was trying to get real fancy exiting cruise speed trying to pull off a disgusting amount of ship spins. My GTX 1070 Rog Strix OC edition running everything at EPIC settings did it's best. Otherwise the game runs very well for day 1 of EA. No bugs experienced or noticed so far, besides one crash due to pushing the limits of my system. I have no doubt with some time and more love from the Dev team, this game is going to be the start of something great. Perhaps even a new era of space combat rpg's if other studios take notice. Great job Rockfish games. Fly safe everyone. o7Show moreShow less
You might've read other negative reviews talking about performance issues, slow EA development, poor/faulty HOTAS controls, repetitive gameplay loop and so on. These issues are there (so far anyway) but in my opinion they're not bad enough to warrant a negative review, especially at Early Access. They're more wait for sale/price drop material than "stay away from it" material. What does warrant a negative review though is the devs' attitude towards the customer and the game itself. Recently (on the topic of VR implementation) the devs have been throwing rather unprofessional tantrums calling the fanbase "toxic", "entitled" and stating they "genuinely don't care anymore". I can't honestly recommend supporting an attitude like this with your money (especially during Early Access, when devs are usually at their nicest since they need your support) and I can't honestly avoid seeing this as a red flag for the future of the game. It could be that the devs' attitude doesn't state solely from "being a jerk" but rather from genuine burnout due to taking a more ambitious project than they could deliver. However whichever the reason might be, when you have devs publicly stating at such an early stage they "genuinely don't care anymore" (actual quote) and turning against the fanbase I personally wouldn't have any hopes of either a good final product nor good customer support. At this point I would say, stay out of it. Everspace 2 is a powder keg waiting to blow.Show moreShow less
I've been playing it since the closed alpha it's a pretty amazing game ! 😍 Right now it's early days but i can say that it's already much better than the first Everspace. ROCKFISH Games this time have decided to go for a narrative-driven open-world space looter shooter, so no more rogue like stuff and to be honest that was a great choice ! Everspace 2 is shaping up to be a very good game, lot of potential here. Tight controls, good gameplay, amazing graphics and sweet loot system. Future best Freelancer like IMO. Can't wait for the full release ! Early access rating 8/10.Show moreShow less
Gorgeous, but with plenty of flaws. I really wanted to like this game, it looks wonderful and the ships feel great to use, but it has a bunch of issues that prevent it from being great. The good: - The visuals look gorgeous and clear. - The weapons feel great to shoot. - The ship controls feel good. - Plenty of ship customization options. The Bad: - Finding loot feels unrewarding most of the time, as you will usually need to find 20+ more pieces of that same item before you can do something with it. I believe that having fewer but more rewarding loot drops would fix this issue. - Some of the perks (especially DAX's) feel mostly pointless as they don't provide a meaningful bonus, especially considering the rather high amount of materials they require. - Same goes for Mainframe Expansions. Getting an extra 0.1% crit chance after farming one of those is extremely underwhelming. You don't feel that bonus making you any stronger. - Combat is relatively superficial. It feels like there aren't many mechanics at play so there's little push-pull between you and the enemies besides trying to itemize your ship the best you can, then point and shoot while strafing. - The puzzles get boring and repetitive rather quick. I don't mind a good puzzle, but most of them are just tedious work, little thinking required. - The mining procedure is also boring and repetitive. There are many mining nodes and having to shoot a bunch at each of them gets boring quickly. I ended up wasting my missiles to reduce mining time. - The plot is boring and the characters have lots of pointless, dumb lines. I would rather have my character be silent than hear him talk so much nonsense. Voiced protagonists add value to the game only as long as they do a good job immersing the player in their situation through what they say (and how they say it) or have entertaining comments that break monotony or provide comic relief. - The audio has that issue where everything sounds like it's happening in the distance rather than nearby, including dialogue. This makes it feel like the characters/sfx/music don't care about you hearing them. - The music feels quite generic, it could've been way more atmospheric, which is a shame because it would've elevated the feel of those gorgeous locations even more. I hope the devs will consider addressing some of these aspects in future patches, especially the unrewarding loot and audio shortcomings. It's a shame because the game has the potential to be one of the best in its genre. I will change my review to positive once the devs patch the tedium out of the game and improve the progression aspects.Show moreShow less
